What this question tests
Tests interpersonal judgment and conflict management with someone senior, checking for a professional, solution-oriented approach rather than avoidance or complaint.
How to approach it
- Situation: describe a real working relationship with a manager who was highly capable but harsh, blunt feedback and dismissive in meetings.
- Task: state what you needed from that relationship to do your job well, clear direction and psychological safety to raise concerns.
- Action: describe how you adapted your communication, more direct, written follow-ups, and addressed the friction respectfully in a 1:1.
- Show boundary-setting: give a specific example of pushing back on a dismissive comment professionally, without escalating unnecessarily.
- Result: state how the working relationship evolved, and what you still accomplished despite the friction.
- Reflect: state what you learned about managing up and communicating with different working styles.
