What this question tests
Analytical rigor and the ability to turn data into an actionable decision.
How to approach it
- Pick a real dataset or analysis with genuine complexity, not a trivial lookup.
- Describe the situation and the question the data was meant to answer.
- Describe the action: segmenting the data, checking for confounds, and validating the finding before acting on it.
- Describe the specific insight found and why it wasn't obvious beforehand.
- Describe the result: what decision or product change the insight drove, and its measurable impact.
- Note how you communicated the insight to stakeholders.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks an analysis with a genuinely non-obvious insight, not a trivial or expected finding.
- Shows rigor, e.g. checking for confounds or segmenting data, rather than taking a surface correlation at face value.
- Clearly states the specific insight and why it changed the team's thinking.
- Ends with a concrete decision made from the insight and its measurable business impact.
Common mistakes
- Describing the analysis process in detail but never stating a specific, concrete insight.
- Skipping the resulting decision or impact, leaving the story without a payoff.
Likely follow-up questions
- How did you validate that the insight wasn't just a coincidence or confound?
- What would you have done if the data contradicted your initial hypothesis?
