What this question tests
Judgment in recognizing a flawed goal mid-execution and the courage to change course.
How to approach it
- Pick a real example where meaningful progress had already been made before the pivot.
- Describe the situation and the original goal, and what specifically revealed it might be wrong, e.g. new data or user feedback.
- Describe the action: how you validated the concern before committing to a pivot, rather than reacting impulsively.
- Describe how you communicated the change to stakeholders who had invested in the original direction.
- Describe the result: the outcome of the pivot and what you learned about setting goals.
- Note how you'd catch this kind of issue earlier next time.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows a genuine, specific trigger for doubting the original goal, e.g. concrete new data, not a vague feeling.
- Demonstrates validating the concern, e.g. a quick check or test, before committing to the more costly pivot.
- Addresses the hard part: communicating the change to stakeholders who had already invested time.
- Ends with an honest result and a genuine lesson about setting or validating goals earlier next time.
Common mistakes
- Describing a pivot that was actually just a minor course correction, not a real goal-level reversal.
- Skipping the stakeholder communication challenge, often the hardest part of a real pivot.
Likely follow-up questions
- How did the team react to the pivot, and how did you manage any resistance?
- What would you do differently to catch this kind of issue earlier next time?
