What this question tests
Conflict resolution and self-awareness, core to Amazon-style behavioral interviews around earning trust and having backbone.
How to approach it
- Situation: briefly describe the working relationship and what caused the friction, being specific about the source of tension.
- Task: state your goal, restoring a productive working relationship, not necessarily agreement on every point.
- Action: describe the first step you took, typically a direct one-on-one conversation rather than avoiding the issue.
- Action: describe what you did differently afterward, such as changing your communication style or setting clearer expectations.
- Result: state the outcome, ideally a specific project or interaction that went well afterward as evidence of repair.
- Result: reflect briefly on what you learned about working relationships from the experience.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a real, specific source of friction, such as disagreement over prioritization or a miscommunication, not something vague like 'personality clash'.
- Shows you took the first step proactively rather than waiting for the other person or a manager to intervene.
- Demonstrates genuine self-reflection, acknowledging your own contribution to the friction, not just the other person's.
- Gives a concrete result, like successfully co-leading a subsequent project, as proof the relationship actually improved.
Common mistakes
- Blaming the other person entirely with no self-reflection.
- Choosing an example that is too minor to show real conflict resolution skill.
- Vague resolution with no specific action taken to repair the relationship.
Likely follow-up questions
