What this question tests
Influence and stakeholder management with senior leaders, without formal authority.
How to approach it
- Pick a real situation with a senior stakeholder whose support you needed.
- Describe the situation and task: what decision or resource needed their buy-in.
- Describe the action: how you built the case, e.g. data-backed reasoning, addressing their specific concerns, choosing the right moment.
- Describe how you handled any pushback respectfully but persistently.
- Describe the result: what changed, and what you learned about influencing senior stakeholders.
- Note how the relationship evolved afterward.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a real example with a specific senior stakeholder and a concrete ask, not a vague 'I aligned with leadership'.
- Shows preparation, e.g. anticipating the stakeholder's specific concerns and addressing them proactively with data.
- Demonstrates respectful persistence in the face of initial pushback, not just quick capitulation.
- Ends with a measurable result and a genuine lesson learned about influence without authority.
Common mistakes
- Describing a case where the senior person already agreed, showing no real management-upward skill.
- Skipping the pushback, making the story feel too easy to be credible.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you have done if they still disagreed after your pitch?
- How do you adjust your approach for different types of senior stakeholders?
