What this question tests
Behavioral: judgment on trading short-term wins for long-term product health, and the reasoning behind that decision.
How to approach it
- Set the Situation: describe the short-term opportunity and the long-term risk or cost it posed.
- Explain the Task: your role in deciding whether to pursue the short-term gain.
- Describe the Action: the factors you weighed, such as technical debt, customer trust, or long-term scalability.
- State the Result: the decision made and its outcome, ideally with a measurable long-term benefit.
- Reflect on how you communicated this trade-off to stakeholders who may have wanted the short-term win.
What a strong answer includes
- Names specific factors weighed, like technical debt accumulation versus a quarter's revenue target.
- Shows how the decision was communicated and justified to stakeholders who disagreed, not just made unilaterally.
- States a concrete long-term outcome, like avoided rework or sustained customer retention.
- Demonstrates genuine trade-off thinking rather than an obviously easy choice dressed up as difficult.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a story where the trade-off wasn't genuinely difficult or costly.
- No evidence of how stakeholders who wanted the short-term win were persuaded.
- Vague or unmeasurable long-term benefit.
Likely follow-up questions
- How did you get stakeholder buy-in for the long-term decision?
- What would have happened if you had chosen the short-term option instead?
- How do you generally weigh short-term versus long-term trade-offs?
