What this question tests
Behavioral: adaptability, whether you can show a genuine shift in how you worked (not just what you worked on) and what triggered it.
How to approach it
- Situation: describe the working style or process you had, and what made it stop working (new team, new scale, new type of stakeholder).
- Task: state what you needed to change about yourself specifically, not the team or company.
- Action: describe the concrete change, e.g. moving from solo decision-making to a more collaborative, data-first process.
- Action: mention what made the change hard, such as pushback or your own discomfort giving up a familiar habit.
- Result: give the outcome, ideally with a measurable improvement in speed, quality, or stakeholder trust.
- Close with what you'd confirm about the interviewer's intent if the story could be read as either a skill gap or growth story.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a specific trigger for the change (e.g. a failed launch, a new manager's feedback) rather than a vague 'I grew over time'.
- Names the actual behavior that changed, like shifting from gut-call decisions to requiring a data check before committing.
- Shows self-awareness about resisting the change initially, which makes the story credible rather than rehearsed.
- Ends with a specific result, such as fewer reworks or faster stakeholder alignment after the change.
Common mistakes
- Describing a change in circumstances (new job, new team) without describing a change in personal behavior.
- Choosing a story with no real friction, which reads as unconvincing or made up.
Likely follow-up questions
- What made you resistant to the change at first?
- How do you know the new way of working is actually better, not just different?
