What this question tests
Persuasion and evidence-based influence skill, shifting opinion with a pilot rather than argument alone.
How to approach it
- Pick a real idea that faced genuine, specific skepticism, not a minor disagreement.
- Describe the situation and the nature of the skepticism, e.g. concerns about feasibility, priority, or risk.
- Describe the action: addressing the specific concerns, e.g. a small pilot to generate evidence rather than arguing harder.
- Describe how you incorporated valid pushback into a revised plan rather than dismissing it.
- Describe the result: the outcome once implemented, and whether it validated the original idea.
- Note what you'd do differently if pitching a similar idea again.
What a strong answer includes
- Names the specific nature of the team's skepticism rather than a vague 'they weren't sure'.
- Uses evidence, e.g. a small pilot or data point, to shift opinion rather than pure argument or authority.
- Shows incorporating valid concerns into a revised plan, demonstrating openness, not just persistence.
- Gives an honest result, including whether the original idea was fully or only partially validated.
Common mistakes
- Describing the skepticism as unfounded and overcome through persuasion alone, with no evidence-gathering step.
- Skipping how any valid objections were actually addressed in the final plan.
Likely follow-up questions
- What if the pilot data had shown you were wrong, what would you have done?
- How do you distinguish valid skepticism from resistance to change?
