What this question tests
Communication and influence skills, specifically structuring a pitch for a mixed audience with different priorities.
How to approach it
- Situation or setup: clarify the audience mix, since executives care about strategic impact and stakeholders may care about execution feasibility.
- Start with the problem and why it matters now, grounding the pitch in a user pain point or business opportunity with data.
- Present the proposed feature concisely, focusing on the core mechanism, not every detail.
- Address impact with a projected metric, clearly marked as an estimate, and tie it to a business priority executives already care about.
- Preempt likely objections, such as resourcing or risk, with a brief mitigation, showing you've thought through feasibility.
- Close with a clear ask, whether that is budget, headcount, or a go-ahead decision, and a next step or timeline.
What a strong answer includes
- Leads with the problem and business impact, not the feature itself, since executives respond to why before what.
- Uses an illustrative, clearly labeled metric projection, for example an assumed 5 percent lift in a relevant KPI, to make the ask concrete.
- Proactively addresses at least one likely objection, such as engineering cost or a competing priority, rather than waiting to be challenged.
- Ends with a specific, actionable ask rather than a vague 'let me know what you think'.
Common mistakes
- Leading with feature details before establishing why the problem matters.
- Giving no data or projected impact at all, making the pitch easy to dismiss.
- Ending without a clear ask or next step.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you handle a stakeholder who pushes back on your projected impact number?
- What would you cut from the pitch if you only had two minutes?
