Are IIM and ISB product management certificates worth the fee?

Short answer: an IIM or ISB product management certificate is worth the fee in two cases: your employer pays, or you specifically want a top institute name on your LinkedIn. It is rarely worth it if you are paying yourself to land a PM job. Fees run from ₹1,00,300 (IIM Trichy) to ₹3,20,842 (ISB's 28 week certificate) with GST, every programme page we read says no job is promised, and not one of 677 PM job postings we analysed asked for a PM certificate. What do IIM and ISB PM certificates cost, and what does the fee buy?

This is the table most people want before they fill in a lead form. AllthingsPM is listed first because it is the option we compare everything else against: the cost of getting interview ready without a brand name.

What are you actually paying for per hour?

Brochures quote months, which makes the fee feel spread out. Hours are the fairer unit, and three programmes state them.

• IIM Trichy: ₹1,00,300 for 60 hours is about ₹1,672 per hour of live class.
• IIM Indore: ₹2,59,600 for about 100 hours is about ₹2,596 per hour, including the campus module.
• ISB 16 weeks: 4 to 6 hours a week over 16 weeks is 64 to 96 hours, so ₹1,88,682 works out to about ₹1,965 to ₹2,948 per hour, and much of that time is recorded video.
• ISB 28 weeks: 112 to 168 hours for ₹3,20,842, about ₹1,910 to ₹2,865 per hour.

IIM Kozhikode and IIM Lucknow do not state a total, so we have not calculated a rate for them.

Does an IIM or ISB certificate help you get a PM job?

This is the question Indian PMs ask on Reddit and Grapevine more than any other, and the programme pages answer it themselves.

ISB's page states: "Emeritus and ISB make no promise or guarantee regarding placement or career transition. We do not offer any placement services or assurances in securing employment outcomes." IIM Kozhikode's page says "IIM Kozhikode or Emeritus do NOT promise or guarantee a job", while offering 15 recorded career sessions to Indian residents. IIM Trichy, IIM Indore and IIM Lucknow do not publish placement figures for these certificates.

ISB does advertise an "88% career impact" figure. Read it carefully: it describes learners who report a positive professional effect, with most seeing it within 12 months. That is a self-reported survey measure, not a placement rate.

Now look from the hiring side. When we read 677 PM job postings from 103 companies for our analysis of whether PM certifications are worth it, not one listed a PM certification as a requirement. Postings ask for shipped products, metrics judgement and, more and more, AI product skills. The interview loop tests those directly: product sense, execution and metrics, strategy and behavioural rounds.

Threads on r/ProductManagement_IN about IIM and IIT certificate courses land in the same place. The certificate signals interest, and it can help a resume get a second look, but the interview is still the gate.

When is an IIM or ISB PM certificate worth the fee?

There are real cases where the answer is yes. Be honest with yourself about which one you are in.

1. Your employer pays. Many companies fund executive education. If the fee is not yours, the brand, the cohort and the structure are pure upside.
2. You want the institute name specifically. For some internal promotions, client facing roles and LinkedIn visibility, "IIM" or "ISB" on a profile carries weight that a course platform does not.
3. You need a fixed live schedule. If you only learn with a Sunday class and a batch waiting for you, IIM Trichy, IIM Indore or IIM Lucknow gives you that rhythm.
4. You want campus time and a peer network. IIM Indore and IIM Lucknow each include a three day campus module, and ISB's 28 week certificate adds ISB Online alumni status.

Each of these is a reason to buy the certificate. None of them is a reason to expect an offer from it.

When is it not worth the fee?

The fee is hard to justify in these situations.

• You are a fresher or career switcher paying from savings. ₹1 lakh to ₹3.2 lakh is a large bet on a certificate that hiring managers do not list. Interview readiness is the constraint, and it is cheap to build.
• You are taking an EMI. Every page we read offers EMIs of 12 to 48 months. At IIM Kozhikode the 36 month option is ₹8,518 a month, so you may still be paying for the certificate years after the skills in it have moved on.

• You cannot commit fixed hours. IIM Trichy's fee is non-refundable in both parts. If your job changes mid batch, the money does not come back.
• You do not meet the bar. IIM Indore needs two years of full time work after graduation, and IIM Lucknow needs one year. Check this before a counsellor call.
