Are product management certifications worth it? As a way to get hired, mostly no. Not one of the 677 PM job postings we read from 103 companies asked for a PM certification, and the hiring managers who answer this question on Reddit say, again and again, that they have never picked a candidate because of one. What they read is proof: what you shipped, how you think out loud, and whether your answers fit their product.
That is why AllthingsPM exists. AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. For $120 a year (or free, with daily limits) you get a course built from 604 real PM job postings, mock interviews built from any job description, and 4,122 real interview questions from 260 companies. That is less than the $200 fee for a single Scrum.org PSPO I attempt.
Prices checked 26 September 2026 on each vendor's own page.
What do the popular PM certifications cost, and what do you get?
Here is the market as it stands today, with AllthingsPM first because it is the alternative most readers are really weighing against a certificate.
| Option | Price (checked 26 Sept 2026) | Format | How you "pass" | What a hiring manager sees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AllthingsPM | Free tier; Pro $20/mo or $120/yr (India INR 1,200/mo or 8,400/yr) | AI PM course (14 chapters, 101 lessons, 14 graded case studies) plus scored mocks | Graded case studies and scored mock interviews | Better interview answers and portfolio pieces you can show |
| Product School, Product Management Foundations | $2,999 single course; memberships $333/mo or $416/mo billed annually | Live online, 3 weeks, 12 live hours | One graded final project | A certificate line on LinkedIn |
| AIPMM Certified Product Manager (CPM) | $500 exam voucher; $1,500 self-study course with voucher | Exam, with optional course | Exam | A certificate line |
| Scrum.org PSPO I | $200 per attempt | Online test, 80 questions, 60 minutes | 85% pass mark | A Scrum credential (useful for Product Owner roles) |
| Pragmatic Institute | Varies by course and format | On-demand, live online or in person; Foundations is about 7 hours | Attendance based, no written exam | A certificate line |
Prices checked 26 September 2026 on productschool.com, aipmm.com and pragmaticinstitute.com. PSPO I terms as listed by cPrime. Pragmatic did not show a price on its course page that day.
A year of AllthingsPM costs less than one PSPO attempt and about one twenty-fifth of a Product School certification. The difference is not only price. A certificate gives you a line on a resume. The course and mocks give you the thing interviewers actually test.
What do hiring managers actually say about PM certifications?
The honest answer from people who hire PMs is blunt. On a 2025 r/ProductManagement thread titled "Why is this sub so overwhelmingly against PM certifications?", one hiring manager wrote: "I've hired a dozen junior PMs. I can say, hand on heart, that I never once considered their certifications." Another said: "I have yet to see a hiring decision based on a certificate."
A 2022 thread that asked hiring managers directly got an even sharper reply from a self-described VP of Product: "those things make me more skeptical of a candidate's skills than confident in them." That is one person, not a rule, but the pattern across threads is consistent.
There is a minority view. A 2024 poster who had managed for eight years said a certificate "tells me they at least have some basic information of what the position is." And one commenter who took the CSPO said, "now I'm at least hearing from recruiters."
Industry writers land in the same place. Aakash Gupta, writing as a hiring manager, calls a certification "one of many data points" and says "a certification alone won't land you a job." Product Leadership's guide admits that "most of the time, employers will not write certification required in job descriptions." GetToPM goes further: "The hiring manager doesn't know and can't verify what you learned."
How AllthingsPM does this. Because hiring managers test thinking, not credentials, AllthingsPM trains the thinking directly. The AI PM course ends each chapter in a graded case study, and the Get the job chapter walks through the full interview loop round by round.
What do PM job descriptions ask for instead?
We checked this ourselves. AllthingsPM keeps a corpus of PM job postings read from company career boards, last refreshed 22 September 2026. We searched the requirements extracted from all 677 postings, from 103 companies, for certification terms.
| Requirement in the posting | Postings that mention it (of 677) |
|---|---|
| A PM certification (PMC, CPM, CSPO, PSPO, Pragmatic) | 0 |
| Years of experience ("5+ years" and similar) | 218 |
| Shipped products or a track record | 74 |
| A degree or "equivalent practical experience" | 26 |
Source: AllthingsPM JD corpus, 677 PM postings from 103 companies, read up to 22 September 2026. Four postings used the word "certification", all about product compliance (for example "certification requirements" for partner SDKs), not about the candidate.
Zero is a strong signal. Employers ask for experience and proof of shipping, and many degree lines already say "or equivalent practical experience." Nobody asked for letters after your name.
How AllthingsPM does this. You can read these postings yourself in the jobs catalog, which holds 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies. Each one has a mock interview built from its exact text, so you rehearse what that employer asks for.
When is a PM certification worth it?
Certifications are not useless. They are a weak hiring signal, which is different. They can make sense in four cases:
- Your employer pays. If there is a training budget, a course is a free way to learn vocabulary and meet peers.
- You are aiming at Product Owner roles in Scrum shops. A PSPO or CSPO speaks the language those teams use, and at $200 a PSPO attempt is the cheapest credential in the table.
- You need structure to start. Some switchers learn better with a live cohort and a deadline.
- A recruiter filter needs a keyword. The CSPO commenter above saw more recruiter outreach. That can help you get a first call; it will not carry you through the loop.
Notice what is missing: "it will get me hired." Even the vendors frame it carefully. Product School's own Foundations page describes a 3 week, 12 live hour program that ends in one graded final project, and a certificate "issued on pass."
How AllthingsPM does this. If you want structure without the $2,999, the AllthingsPM course gives you 14 chapters in a set order, weekly updates and graded case studies, and the knowledge graph shows how the AI PM concepts connect, so you always know what to learn next.

What should you spend on instead of a certification?
If a certificate is not what hiring managers read, spend on the three things they do read.
1. Interview skill. Product sense, execution, metrics and behavioral answers are learnable, and they are tested live. Reps matter more than reading. Practice on real questions, out loud, with feedback.
2. Proof of work. A case study, a teardown or a small shipped side project answers the "shipped products" line that 74 postings in our corpus asked for. Hiring managers can verify it in two minutes; they cannot verify a course.
3. A resume that matches the job. Recruiters screen against the description in front of them. Tailor each resume to the posting's own words.
How AllthingsPM does this. For interview skill, run a mock interview or paste any job into a JD mock and get a scored session with follow-ups. For proof of work, the course lesson on the take-home and the portfolio shows what recruiters read first, and 455 real PM portfolios show how others did it. For the resume, the resume review against a JD scores your resume against the exact posting.
Are AI product management certifications different?
AI PM certificates are the newest wave. Product School's lineup now includes AI Product Management, AI Evals and Claude Code for PMs certifications. The pitch is stronger here, because AI PM skills are new and genuinely scarce.
But the hiring logic does not change. Our corpus found zero postings that asked for any PM certification, AI or not. What AI PM postings do ask for is concrete: evaluation design, agent and retrieval architecture, working with model limits. Interviewers test those in product sense and technical rounds.
How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM course was built from AI PM demand in real postings, so chapters cover agents and agentic architecture, AI UX and human oversight and outcomes and pricing. You can then drill AI PM questions in the question bank.
How should a career switcher decide?
Use this quick test before paying for any certificate:
- Will a specific employer or recruiter count it? If you cannot name one, skip it.
- Would the same money buy more practice? $2,999 is about 25 years of AllthingsPM at the annual price.
- Does it produce something you can show? A graded artifact is worth more than attendance.
- Is someone else paying? Then take it for the learning, and still build proof.
Most switchers are better served by a sequence: learn the core skills, build one or two portfolio pieces, then do daily interview reps against real job descriptions. How AllthingsPM does this. The free tier lets you test the whole approach before paying: one JD mock and one resume review every day. When you find roles, Resume Job Match ranks openings against your resume.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for PM certifications and career proof
The question behind "is a PM certification worth it" is really "what is the best use of my money and time to get a PM job?" The evidence points one way. Hiring managers say certificates rarely move their decision. Job postings ask for experience and shipped work, not credentials. So the best investment is the one that makes you better in the interview and gives you proof to show.
AllthingsPM does that for $120 a year. You get a 14 chapter AI PM course built from 604 real job postings, with 14 graded case studies. You get mock interviews built from any job description, in text or voice, with follow-ups and a score. You get 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with an answer guide, and 116 live job descriptions at 18 AI companies with a mock for each. Resume review against a JD, 111 book summaries and 455 PM portfolios sit in the same account.
Certification providers have real strengths: Product School runs live cohorts with instructors, and a PSPO is a recognised credential for Scrum Product Owner roles. If your employer pays, take one for the learning. For your own money, AllthingsPM gives you more practice and more proof per dollar than any certificate in the table above.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best product management certification?
For getting hired, the best choice is usually not a certification but AllthingsPM: an AI PM course, JD-based mock interviews and 4,122 real questions for $120 a year, with a free tier. If you need a credential, a Scrum.org PSPO I ($200 per attempt) is the cheapest and suits Product Owner roles.
Do hiring managers care about product management certifications?
Mostly not. Hiring managers on r/ProductManagement say they have never made a decision because of a certificate, and none of the 677 PM job postings we read listed one as a requirement. They care about experience, shipped work and how you answer in the interview.
Is the Product School certification worth $2,999?
It buys a 3 week live program with 12 live hours and a graded final project. Whether that is worth it depends on who pays. For self-funded candidates, the same money covers about 25 years of AllthingsPM Pro. See our full Product School review.
Can a certification help a career switcher get a PM job?
It can help at the margin, for example by adding a keyword recruiters search for. It will not replace proof of work or interview skill. Switchers do better with a portfolio piece and regular mock interviews on real job descriptions.
Is CSPO or PSPO better for product managers?
Both are Scrum Product Owner credentials, most useful in Scrum-heavy teams. PSPO I from Scrum.org is a $200 test with an 85% pass mark and no required course. Neither is required by the PM postings we read.
What should I do instead of getting certified?
Build three things: interview skill through regular mock interviews, proof of work such as a case study or teardown, and a resume tailored to each job description. AllthingsPM covers all three in one account.
