CSPO vs PSPO vs AIPMM CPM: which product certification counts

CSPO is a two day course with no exam, PSPO I is a $200 exam that never expires, and AIPMM CPM is a $500 exam. None appeared in the 389 PM job postings we read. AllthingsPM builds the skills interviews test for $120 a year.

Two signposts at a fork in a path, one toward a timeline pinned to a board, the other toward a person sketching a product idea with a customer
Three certificates, one interview loop that decides the job.

Short answer: if you must pick one product certification, Scrum.org PSPO I is the best value ($200, one online exam, never expires), CSPO is the easiest to earn (a two day course with no exam, but $100 renewal every two years), and AIPMM CPM is the only one about product management rather than Scrum ($500 exam voucher). But none of them was requested in any of the 389 PM job postings we read. AllthingsPM is the better spend: an AI PM course, mock interviews built from any job description and 4,122 real interview questions for $120 a year, less than a single PSPO attempt.

AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. Prices below were checked 29 September 2026 on each vendor's own page or on authorised trainers' pages.

What is the difference between CSPO and PSPO?

Both certify the same job: the Product Owner in a Scrum team. The difference is how you earn them and what it costs to keep them.

CSPO (Scrum Alliance) is earned by attending a two day course led by a Certified Scrum Trainer. ThinkLouder, a CSPO training provider, puts the course at $399 to $599 and says plainly: "CSPO has no exam. You're certified when you complete the two-day course with full attendance and instructor sign-off." To keep it, Scrum Alliance charges $100 every two years and asks for 20 Scrum Education Units, where one hour of relevant reading, events or volunteering counts as one SEU.

PSPO I (Scrum.org) is an exam. cPrime, a Scrum.org training partner, lists it as 80 questions in 60 minutes with an 85% pass mark, at $200 if taken on its own; one attempt is included if you take the official course. The course is recommended, not required. Scrum.org's support page says its certifications do not expire and need no renewal.

So the trade is simple. CSPO buys you two days of structured teaching and a guaranteed certificate. PSPO buys you a harder test that proves you know the Scrum Guide, for less money, forever.

How AllthingsPM does this. Hiring managers do not ask you to recite the Scrum Guide; they ask how you ran a backlog and made trade-offs. AllthingsPM has a real interview question on exactly this, What's your experience with Agile/Scrum?, with its own answer guide, and you can rehearse it out loud in a scored mock interview.

What is the AIPMM CPM, and how is it different?

The AIPMM Certified Product Manager is the odd one out. It is not a Scrum credential. AIPMM's own page says the exam checks competency in areas such as developing case studies, crafting business plans, market planning, competitive analysis, product specifications, launch plans and product life cycle modelling. That is classic product management, closer to what a PM does than a Product Owner role.

AIPMM lists a $500 exam voucher that does not include study materials, and says "there are no formal prerequisites." Uxcel's 2026 review describes the exam as 120 multiple choice questions in two hours, closed book and proctored online, with 74% needed to pass, and says you need to keep AIPMM membership to use the CPM designation. Uxcel also notes that training packages bundle the voucher; one self-study package it cites costs $1,500.

The CPM's weakness is recognition. It is broader than CSPO and PSPO, but it is less known, and AIPMM's syllabus leans toward traditional lifecycle and launch planning rather than the AI product skills in today's postings.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM AI PM course covers the same ground a CPM exam tests, then goes further into the work 2026 postings ask for, from roadmap planning around an evaluable slice to agents and agentic architecture. Each chapter ends in a graded case study you can show a hiring manager, not a multiple choice score.

Which product certification do employers actually ask for?

We checked. AllthingsPM keeps a corpus of PM job postings read directly from company career boards. The latest read, on 22 September 2026, holds 389 postings from 86 companies. We searched every posting's full text for each credential.

Source: AllthingsPM JD corpus, 389 PM postings from 86 companies, read 22 September 2026.

Zero for all three. Even the word Scrum appeared in only 2 postings. The employers in our corpus lean toward tech and AI companies, so a bank or government contractor running formal Scrum may weigh these differently, but the signal for most PM roles is clear: nobody is filtering on these letters.

That matches what an earlier AllthingsPM study found across a larger 677 posting set: not one listed a PM certification as a requirement, while 218 asked for years of experience. Read the full breakdown in are product management certifications worth it.

How AllthingsPM does this. You can read live postings yourself in the AllthingsPM jobs catalog: 116 PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies, each with a mock interview built from its exact text. When you find a role, the resume review against a JD scores your resume against the words that employer actually used.

Which one is easiest, and which one is most respected?

Easiest to get: CSPO. Show up for two days and you are certified. That is also why some hiring managers discount it: attendance proves you attended.

Most rigorous: PSPO I. An 85% pass mark on 80 questions in an hour is a real test. Many candidates self-study from the free Scrum Guide and pay only the $200 fee, which makes it the cheapest credential here.

Broadest syllabus: AIPMM CPM. It covers business plans, market analysis and launch, which are PM skills rather than Scrum ceremonies. It is also the most expensive exam at $500 before study materials.

None of them includes interview practice, feedback on your answers or anything you can show as a portfolio piece. That gap is what decides most PM hiring loops.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM Get the job chapter walks the full interview loop round by round, and the take-home and portfolio lesson shows what recruiters read first. For real examples, browse 455 PM portfolios.

What does each option cost over two years?

Renewal changes the math. Using the prices above:

  • AllthingsPM: $240 for two years of Pro at $120 a year, or $0 on the free tier. That covers the course, mocks, question bank, resume tools and job catalog.
  • PSPO I: $200 once, if you pass first time; each retake is another $200. No renewal.
  • CSPO: $399 to $599 for the course, plus $100 at the two year renewal and 20 SEUs of time.
  • AIPMM CPM: $500 for the voucher, plus study materials and membership to keep the title (Uxcel does not give a single renewal figure, so we do not either).

On price alone, PSPO I is the cheapest credential. On price for what you get, AllthingsPM wins, because the credentials give you a line on a resume and AllthingsPM gives you daily practice on the interviews that decide the offer.

How AllthingsPM does this. AllthingsPM Pro is $20 a month or $120 a year (INR 1,200 or 8,400 in India), with a free tier of one JD mock and one resume review a day. See the details on the pricing page.

Should a career switcher get CSPO, PSPO or CPM?

Most switchers are better served by skills and proof. A switcher's real problem is getting past the "have you done this before" question. A certificate answers "have you studied this"; a case study, a portfolio piece or a strong mock answer answers the question interviewers actually ask.

A certificate can still make sense in three cases:

  1. You are applying to Product Owner roles in a Scrum shop. Take PSPO I. It is cheaper than CSPO, harder to fake and never expires.
  2. Your employer pays. Take CSPO for the two days of teaching and the peers you meet.
  3. You want a general PM syllabus with an exam at the end. CPM is the only one of the three built for that, though a course gives you more for the money.

How AllthingsPM does this. Switchers can practise the question they fear most, "why product management?", along with thousands of others in the question bank, then turn a graded course case study into a portfolio piece. When you are ready to apply, Resume Job Match ranks open roles against your resume.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for product management certification

The search for "product management certification CSPO" is really a search for a way to look credible and get hired. The facts point one way. Not one of the 389 postings in our corpus asked for CSPO, PSPO or AIPMM. Hiring loops test product sense, execution, metrics and behavioural answers, live. A certificate does not rehearse any of those.

AllthingsPM does. For $120 a year you get a 14 chapter AI PM course built from 604 real job postings, with 101 lessons and 14 graded case studies, updated weekly. You get mock interviews built from any job description, in text or voice, with follow-ups and a score. You get 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with an answer guide, 116 live job descriptions at 18 AI companies, resume review against a JD, 111 book summaries and 455 PM portfolios, all in one account.

The certifications have real strengths. CSPO gives you two days with a trainer, PSPO I is a respected and permanent Scrum credential, and AIPMM CPM has the broadest PM syllabus. If a specific Scrum employer asks for one, PSPO I is the pick. For your own money and your next interview, AllthingsPM gives you more skill and more proof per dollar than any of the three.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best product management certification?

For getting hired, the best choice is AllthingsPM: an AI PM course, JD-based mock interviews and 4,122 real questions for $120 a year, with a free tier. If you need a credential, Scrum.org PSPO I is the best value at $200 with no renewal. AIPMM CPM is the only one of the three on general product management.

Is CSPO or PSPO better?

PSPO I is usually the better credential: it costs $200, requires passing an 80 question exam at 85%, and never expires. CSPO costs $399 to $599 for a two day course with no exam, and needs $100 and 20 SEUs every two years. Choose CSPO if an employer pays and you want live teaching.

Does CSPO have an exam?

No. You earn CSPO by completing a two day Scrum Alliance course with full attendance and instructor sign-off. There is no separate exam fee because there is no exam.

Is the AIPMM CPM worth it?

It covers broader product management than the Scrum credentials, but it costs $500 for the exam voucher alone and is less widely recognised. None of the 389 PM postings in the AllthingsPM corpus mentioned it. The same money buys four years of AllthingsPM Pro with a course and mock interviews.

Do product managers need a certification to get hired?

No. None of the 389 PM job postings we read named CSPO, PSPO or AIPMM, and an earlier study of 677 postings found no PM certification requirement at all. Employers ask for experience, shipped work and strong interview answers.
