What should a technical PM course teach in 2026?

"Technical PM" used to mean one thing: you could follow an engineering design review. That still matters. But job postings now ask for more than that.

Our count of 604 PM postings from 95 companies, read in full on 6 September 2026, found this [1]:

  • SQL: 69 postings at 27 companies. It is still the most-named tool overall.
  • APIs: 52 postings at 29 companies, the widest spread of any tool.
  • MCP: 28 of the 286 AI-native postings, but only 5 of the 318 others.
  • AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor and others): 27 AI-native postings at 13 companies.

So a good technical course in 2026 teaches three layers:

  1. Data: write SQL that answers a product question, and read logs.
  2. Integration: know what an API request and response look like, and make one yourself.
  3. AI: understand how models, tokens, agents and evals behave, well enough to set a launch bar.

Most courses teach one layer well. The ranking below rewards courses that teach by doing, and that match what postings ask for.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AI PM course follows these three layers in order. Data fluency covers SQL and logs, PM as builder has you prototype and inspect an agent, and Agents and agentic architecture covers the AI layer. Every lesson is one short video, one written lesson and something you do.

The 8 best technical courses for PMs, ranked

1. AllthingsPM AI PM course: best overall for SQL, APIs and AI together

The AllthingsPM course has 14 chapters, 101 lessons and 14 graded case studies, built from 604 real PM job postings and updated weekly. The technical parts:

The AllthingsPM course page listing 14 chapters and 101 lessons, with Foundations, Data fluency and PM as builder at the top

Price: a free tier, then $20 a month or $120 a year (INR 1,200 a month or 8,400 a year). It has no live cohort, so if you need a live instructor, see the programs below.

2. GoPractice SQL simulator: best for deep SQL practice

GoPractice puts you on the team of a young e-commerce marketplace and has you answer product and marketing questions with SQL against a real database. It lists 400+ tasks, 24 chapters and about 50 hours of material, with automatic feedback on most exercises. It says most people finish in about four weeks of daily study [2]. The price is not shown on the course page. It is only SQL.

How AllthingsPM does this. Start with the SQL for PMs lesson so you know which queries matter for product decisions. If you then want hundreds more reps, GoPractice is a good second step. The AllthingsPM course also shows where SQL stops and AI starts, which a SQL-only simulator does not cover.

3. Skiplevel: best for architecture basics without code

Skiplevel describes itself as a self-paced technical foundations program for PMs that works "without teaching you how to code" [3]. Its modules cover application infrastructure, speed and performance, data and databases, architecture and diagrams, and the development lifecycle. It includes hands-on exercises in Postman, AWS and GitLab, and a certificate. Individuals pay $1,250 for 12 months of access [4]. It is strong on systems. AI is not in its listed modules.

4. ProductDive Certified Technical Product Management Program: best live cohort

A 7-week live program on Saturdays (8 hours a week) covering system design, API management, identity and access management, microservices, performance, software testing and an AI capstone. It costs $385 one-time or $396 to $420 in parts. AIPMM certification is sold separately. The current cohort runs 26 September to 31 October 2026, with enrollment capped at 30 [5]. It is a good fit if you want a live group. The schedule is set in GMT+1.

How AllthingsPM does this. For the system design part, pair the course with our guide to technical PM interviews and system design for PMs. It is self-paced, so you do not need to be free on Saturdays.

5. Maven: AI Evals for Engineers and PMs: best deep dive on evals

Taught by Hamel Husain and Shreya Shankar: 6 weeks, 15 live sessions, 4 homework assignments and lifetime access to recordings. It costs $4,200, and the next cohort runs 10 October to 21 November 2026 [6]. It is the most in-depth evals option on this list. It covers only evals.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM evals chapter teaches evals as a PM decision: golden sets, launch bars and defending the number to leadership. It is part of the $120 a year plan. Read our comparison of AI evals courses for PMs before you spend $4,200.

6. DeepLearning.AI short courses: best free-standing AI build videos

Short courses mostly run 1 to 3 hours. Longer ones include Andrew Ng's Agentic AI (9 hours 55 minutes, intermediate) and Multi AI Agent Systems with crewAI (3 hours 1 minute, beginner) [7]. They are aimed at engineers, so you get code but not the PM decisions around it.

7. Reforge: best if your team already pays

Reforge Individual costs $1,995 a year for 40+ on-demand courses and 600+ guides [8]. The pricing page does not list a technical foundations course, so check the catalog before you buy it for SQL or APIs.

8. ThoughtSpot SQL tutorial (formerly Mode): best reference

The well-known Mode SQL tutorial now redirects to ThoughtSpot, starting with an introduction to SQL [9]. Use it as a reference while you learn. It has no product context.

How do you choose the right technical PM course?

Ask three questions.

Which skill is your gap? Check the job description, not a generic list. If the posting says "SQL," you need queries. If it says "API platform" or "developer experience," you need APIs. If it mentions agents, evals or MCP, you need the AI layer. For example, OpenAI's Product Manager, API Agents posting needs all three.

Will you do it, or only watch it? Pick courses where you write the query or make the call. Explaining a concept on a whiteboard is not the same as having done it.

Can you prove it? Interviewers ask technical questions such as how you would design a text to SQL API service at Google. A graded case study, or a query you can walk through, helps more than a certificate.

How AllthingsPM does this. Paste the posting you want into Resume Job Match or open it in the jobs catalog, which has 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies. Then study the course chapters that posting calls for and run a mock interview built from that JD. Study, practice and the interview all run from the same posting.

A 6-week technical study plan you can copy

Weeks 1 and 2: SQL. Take SQL for PMs, then write one query a day against any product question you have. Read our SQL for product managers guide for the query patterns.

Week 3: APIs. Make your first LLM API call with the free API lesson and our walkthrough of the OpenAI API for PMs. Look at the usage block and work out what one call costs.

Week 4: MCP and agents. Connect an agent to one tool in MCP first contact, then read MCP for PMs explained.

Week 5: evals. Work through the evals chapter and write a small golden set for a feature you know.

Week 6: prove it. Practice 30 technical PM interview questions out loud, then run a scored mock on your target role.

How AllthingsPM does this. Every week of this plan runs in one AllthingsPM account. The free lessons cover weeks 1 to 3 as a starting point, and Pro unlocks the rest for $20 a month. The question bank has 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with an answer guide, for week 6.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for a technical PM course

Most technical PM courses teach one layer. GoPractice teaches SQL, Skiplevel teaches architecture, and Maven teaches evals. Each does its layer well. But a 2026 job posting asks for all three layers, and buying each specialist separately costs thousands.

AllthingsPM covers all three in one course:

  • SQL, APIs and AI in one path. Data fluency, PM as builder, Agents and Evals are chapters in one 101-lesson course, and each lesson ends with something you do.
  • Built from demand. The curriculum comes from 604 real PM job postings at 95 companies, so the lessons match what employers ask for. It is updated weekly as postings change.
  • Proof, not just a certificate. 14 graded case studies give you work to show, and the same account runs mock interviews built from any job description.
  • Price. $120 a year with a free tier, compared with $385 for ProductDive, $1,250 for Skiplevel and $4,200 for the Maven evals course.

Live cohorts give you an instructor and a group. That is worth it for some people, once. For learning the whole technical stack and practicing it against the role you want, start with AllthingsPM. Open the AI PM course.

Start with the two free lessons today: make one API call, then write one query. By the end of the week you will know which of the three layers is your gap. Start the AllthingsPM course free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best technical product manager course?

AllthingsPM's AI PM course, because it teaches SQL, API calls, MCP, agents and evals in one course built from 604 real PM job postings, for $120 a year with a free tier. Add GoPractice for extra SQL reps or Skiplevel for architecture if you need more depth.

Do product managers need to know SQL in 2026?

For many roles, yes. SQL was the most-named tool across 604 PM job postings (69 postings at 27 companies). You do not need to be an analyst, but you should be able to write the few queries that answer a product question.

Do PMs need to learn to code to be technical?

No. You need to read an API request, write basic SQL and understand how models and agents behave. Skiplevel teaches technical foundations without coding, and AllthingsPM has you make a real API call without building an app.

What technical skills do AI PM roles ask for?

In 286 AI-native PM postings, the most-named tools were APIs, MCP, SQL and AI coding tools such as Claude Code and Cursor. The AllthingsPM course has a lesson for each of them.

Is a technical PM certification worth it?

A certificate helps less than proof you can do the work. A graded case study, a query you can explain, or a strong technical interview answer shows more. Practice those with AllthingsPM's question bank and JD mocks.
