Evals start with reading real outputs and sorting what went wrong. The right course makes you do exactly that.

The best course to learn AI evals as a product manager, for most people, is the Evals chapter of AllthingsPM's AI PM course: nine units that walk you from reading 100 real traces to validating an LLM judge and gating a release in CI, inside a course built from 604 real PM job postings, for $120 a year with a free tier. If you want live teaching from the people who popularised the method, Hamel Husain and Shreya Shankar's AI Evals for Engineers and PMs on Maven ($4,200) is the deepest option. For a free, code-first primer, take DeepLearning.AI's Evaluating AI Agents.

One Maven evals cohort costs the same as 35 years of AllthingsPM's annual plan. That does not make the cohort bad. It means you should learn the method first, cheaply, and pay for live time only if a specific gap remains.

What should a PM evals course actually teach?

A PM does not need to build an eval harness from scratch. A PM does need to decide what "good" means, and to make the number defensible when a launch depends on it. Hamel Husain's own advice is that most AI products fail on evaluation, not on the model, and that the work starts with looking at your data [7]. He and Shankar say they spend 60 to 80 percent of development time on error analysis and evaluation [8].

A good course for PMs should cover six things:

  1. Error analysis. Reading real outputs and naming failures before choosing any tool.
  2. Golden datasets. Turning complaints into test cases, and knowing how many you need.
  3. Grader choice. Code checks first, then an LLM judge, then humans, in that cost order.
  4. Judge validation. Measuring how often the LLM judge agrees with a human, as Shankar and colleagues studied in "Who Validates the Validators?" [9].
  5. Release gates. Tying a pass rate to a ship decision and a CI check.
  6. Agent evals. Judging whether a multi-step agent reached the right end state, which Anthropic's engineering team describes as a different problem from grading single answers [10].

Most courses cover the first four. Fewer tie the eval number to a launch decision, and almost none prepare you to explain it in an interview.

How AllthingsPM does this. Our Evals chapter maps one unit to each of those six skills, then closes with an integration case where you build the eval suite for a feature you carried through the earlier chapters. You name failures from one taxonomy, turn one complaint into thirty golden examples, pick the cheapest evaluator that can see the failure, write the failing eval before the fix, and evaluate an agent, not an answer.

The best AI evals courses for product managers, ranked

1. AllthingsPM AI PM course, Evals chapter: best overall for PMs

The course was built backwards from 604 real PM job postings from 95 companies [11]. In that corpus, 53% of the 286 AI-native roles asked for evals and measurement, and the word "eval" appeared in 32% of AI-native postings against 3% of other PM postings [11]. That is why evals get a full chapter rather than a single lesson.

The Evals chapter runs nine units:

  • Read one hundred real traces before you buy any eval tooling.
  • Name the failure from one taxonomy, and rank the backlog.
  • Turn one complaint into thirty golden examples.
  • Pay for the cheapest evaluator that can see the failure.
  • Write the criterion: binary by default, and a judge you can trust.
  • Validate the judge: false-positive and false-negative rates and a frozen test set.
  • Eval-driven development and the CI gate.
  • Evaluate an agent with final-state assertions and pass-k reliability.
  • An integration case: the eval suite for your own feature, graded.

It sits next to the chapters an evals skill depends on: a later chapter, Prove it paid off, connects eval scores to adoption, deflection and ROI, and a lesson on multimodal evals covers golden sets for images and audio. The course is updated weekly.

Its one limit: it is self-paced, with no live instructor. If you need a person to answer your eval question in real time, add a cohort later.

2. AI Evals for Engineers and PMs (Hamel Husain and Shreya Shankar, Maven): best live deep dive

$4,200 for a six-week cohort running 10 October to 21 November 2026, with 15 live sessions, a 200+ page course reader, 10+ office hours, four homework assignments with solutions, a certificate, and lifetime access to future cohorts. It is rated 4.7 from 901 reviews [1]. The syllabus covers error analysis, LLM-as-judge and code-based evaluators, CI regression tests, red-teaming and cost-latency experiments [1]. Lenny's Podcast called evals "the hottest new skill for product builders" in its episode with the two instructors [8].

It is the most thorough live evals course we found, and it leans technical. For a PM, the smart order is to learn the method on AllthingsPM first, then buy this cohort only if your job makes you the owner of an eval pipeline.

3. AI Evals Certification (Product School): best if you need a certificate

$2,999 for three part-time weeks: six live sessions (12 hours) and 14 hands-on labs, taught by Saurabh Khanna, listed as a Product Lead at Meta [2]. It promises frameworks to define "good" beyond accuracy, failure-mode discovery, calibrated eval suites and CI/CD gates, with six portfolio artifacts and a graded capstone [2]. Product School also sells unlimited membership at $416 a month billed annually [2].

The certificate is its real draw. For the same skills and interview practice at 1/25 of the price, AllthingsPM is the better buy.

How AllthingsPM does this. Instead of a certificate, AllthingsPM gives you proof you can show: the graded integration case from the Evals chapter, which you can add to a PM portfolio the way many of the 455 portfolios there present project work.

4. Evaluating AI Agents (DeepLearning.AI with Arize): best free technical primer

A beginner short course taught by John Gilhuly and Aman Khan of Arize AI: 15 video lessons, six code examples, 2 hours 36 minutes, free during the platform beta, with a graded assignment for Pro members only [3]. You build an agent, add tracing, and choose between code-based and LLM-as-judge evaluators for each component [3]. It expects basic Python.

It is excellent for seeing how tracing tools work. It does not teach the PM side: what to measure, what pass rate blocks a launch, or how to argue the trade-off with engineering.

5. Prototype to Production: The AI PM Playbook (Aman Khan, Maven)

A four-week live AI PM sprint, rated 4.8 from 60 reviews, that treats evals as "the hidden lever behind every exceptional AI product" [4]. The price was not shown when we checked [4]. Khan's free Lenny's Newsletter guide, "Beyond vibe checks", is a good taster: it lays out a four-part formula for writing LLM judge prompts (role, context, goal, terminology) [12].

6. HelloPM free AI PM masterclasses

Nine free recorded masterclasses (12+ hours) covering LLMs, RAG, AI evals, agents, PRDs and PM interviews [5]. It is a good free overview, but evals are one session among nine.

Free reading that works like a course

If you prefer to read: Hamel Husain and Shreya Shankar's evals FAQ [13], Anthropic's "Demystifying evals for AI agents" [10] and OpenAI's evaluation best practices [14] are free and written by practitioners. They are the best free references; none of them grades your work or connects it to the interview.

How AllthingsPM does this. The course cites the same practitioner methods, then turns each into a graded unit, so reading becomes doing. Our summary of Lenny's Podcast evals episodes and the podcast summaries library cover the talks without the hours of audio.

How do evals show up in AI PM interviews?

This is where most evals courses stop and where AllthingsPM keeps going. Interviewers at AI companies now ask PMs to design an eval, not define one. Our question bank has real scenarios such as offline evals show strong gains but dogfooders say the model feels worse and a frontier code model is state of the art on benchmarks but beta users say it is inconsistent. In September 2026, 95 of the bank's 4,122 questions matched eval, evaluation, golden set, LLM judge or hallucination [15].

A strong answer follows the chapter's loop: say what failure you would look for, how you would sample real traces, which grader you would trust and why, and what number would stop the launch.

Some roles are evals end to end. Abridge's Product Lead, AI/ML (Evals) posting is one [16], and it is in our jobs catalog with a mock built from it.

How AllthingsPM does this. Paste any AI PM posting into the JD mock and the interviewer builds questions from that role, asks follow-ups and scores your answer, in text or voice. Browse the full question bank or the AI company job descriptions to find the eval questions your target company is likely to ask.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for learning AI evals

Evals are a PM skill because the PM decides what "good" means and whether the product ships. The courses in this list mostly teach evals as an engineering practice, sold as a single cohort. AllthingsPM teaches evals as the PM owns them, in a graded chapter that sits inside a full AI PM curriculum.

The facts behind that:

  • Built from demand. The course comes from 604 real PM job postings, where 53% of AI-native roles asked for evals and measurement.
  • Complete loop. Nine units from trace reading to judge validation, CI gates and agent evals, plus a graded integration case.
  • Connected skills. Chapters on agents, the AI PRD and proving business outcomes sit around the Evals chapter, so you learn what the number is for.
  • Interview practice included. JD mocks from any posting, 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, and 116 live AI company job descriptions.
  • Price. $120 a year or $20 a month, with a free tier, against $2,999 to $4,200 for one live cohort.

The rivals have real strengths. Maven's Husain and Shankar cohort gives you live access to two of the field's best-known practitioners, and DeepLearning.AI is free and hands-on. But for a PM who needs to learn evals, use them at work and explain them in an interview, AllthingsPM covers all three for a fraction of the cost.
