AllthingsPM·September 26, 2026·13 min read
A printed job description on a desk with lines highlighted in three colours, index cards of interview questions fanned out beside it and a laptop open to a practice interview
The job description is the closest thing you have to the interviewer's question list.

The fastest way to get a mock interview from any job description is to paste the posting into the AllthingsPM JD mock. The AI interviewer reads the role, company, product area and seniority, asks a question written for that job, follows up on what you actually said, and scores you, in text or voice. One JD mock a day is free; unlimited mocks are $20 a month. AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform, and the JD mock is its core tool.

If you want to do it by hand, the full template is below: a way to read a posting, turn each line into a likely question, run the mock and score it.

Why build a mock interview from the job description at all?

Because the interviewers probably did. The US Office of Personnel Management notes that interview questions based on the competencies a job analysis finds critical "demonstrate high levels of validity, rater reliability, and rater agreement" [1]. Hiring teams that run structured interviews write their questions from the same requirements they put in the posting.

Career advice says the same thing from the candidate's side. Indeed tells candidates to "review the job description to identify the types of questions the employer may ask during the interview" [2]. Jobscan suggests "a talking point for each technical or hard skill listed in the job description" and a list of stories that match its soft skills [3].

A generic question list cannot do that. A PM role at an AI lab will push on evals and model limits; a growth role will push on metrics and experiments. Our own count of 335 live AI-native PM postings across 88 companies found technical fluency about model trade-offs in 88 percent of them and enterprise deployment in 79 percent [4]. Those are the lines your interview will probe.

How AllthingsPM does this. The JD mock does the reading for you. Paste the full posting and the interview is shaped by that role's responsibilities and level, so the first question and every follow-up come from the job you applied for, not from a fixed bank.

How does the AllthingsPM JD mock work, step by step?

The AllthingsPM JD mock page: paste a job description and get a mock built around that exact role, company and level
The JD mock on AllthingsPM, September 2026
  1. Copy the full posting. Include the "about the team" section; it tells you the product area. No posting yet? Pick one of 116 live PM roles at 18 AI companies in the jobs catalog, such as Product Manager, Growth at Anthropic. Each role page already has a mock built from it.
  2. Paste it into the JD mock. The interviewer reads the role, company, product area and seniority.
  3. Choose text or voice. Both are on the same screen. Voice is closer to the real room.
  4. Answer, then handle the follow-ups. The interviewer asks about the weak parts of what you said, over about 30 minutes and six follow-ups.
  5. Read the score and the transcript. Every mock is saved, so you can reread where a follow-up caught you.
  6. Fix one thing and run it again tomorrow. The free tier resets each day at midnight UTC.

What is the JD-to-mock template?

Here it is in full. It takes about 45 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to run. Copy it into a doc.

Step 1: Mark up the posting (10 minutes)

Print or paste the job description and mark every line with one of four tags:

  • [R] Responsibility: what you will own ("own the roadmap for enterprise agents").
  • [S] Skill: what you must be able to do ("comfortable with SQL", "define eval criteria").
  • [C] Context: product area, users, team, stage ("B2B, 0 to 1, reports to the Head of Product").
  • [V] Value or trait: how they want you to work ("bias for action", "high agency").

Then circle the three phrases that appear more than once or sit at the top. Those are the role's priorities.

Step 2: Turn each tagged line into a question (15 minutes)

Use this mapping table. One row per circled or tagged line.

JD line typeRound it predictsQuestion pattern to write
[R] Own a product or roadmapProduct sense, strategy"How would you improve [their product] for [their user]?" / "What would you build next and why?"
[R] Drive metrics or growthAnalytical, metrics"Metric X dropped 15 percent last week. What do you do?" / "How would you measure success for [feature]?"
[S] Technical or AI skillTechnical, AI product"How would you decide between two models for [their use case]?" / "How would you evaluate this feature before launch?"
[S] Data or SQLAnalytical"What data would you pull, and what would change your mind?"
[C] Stage (0 to 1, scale)Product sense, execution"You have no users yet. How do you decide what to build first?"
[C] Enterprise, B2BExecution, stakeholder"A large customer wants a custom feature that breaks the roadmap. What do you do?"
[V] Values and traitsBehavioral"Tell me about a time you [trait in their words]."

Write 8 to 12 questions. At least two must use the company's own product names, and at least three must be behavioral, one for each value line.

Step 3: Prepare stories, not scripts (10 minutes)

For each behavioral question, pick one real story and note four lines: the situation, what you decided, the result with a number, and what you would do differently. Jobscan's advice to prepare stories that match the posting's soft skills fits here [3]. Do not memorise wording.

Step 4: Run the mock (30 minutes)

Pick one product question, one analytical or technical question and two behavioral questions. Set a timer and answer out loud.

  • Spend the first minute on clarifying questions and a stated structure.
  • After each answer, ask yourself the follow-up an interviewer would: "Why that metric?", "What would you cut?", "What if the model is wrong 10 percent of the time?"
  • Record yourself if you are alone. Listening back shows where you rambled.

Step 5: Score it

Rate each answer from 1 to 4 on five rows.

Rubric row14
StructureNo plan statedPlan stated in the first minute and followed
Tied to the JDGeneric answerUses the role's users, product and priorities
DepthLists ideasMakes a decision and defends the trade-off
MetricsNoneNames a success metric and a guardrail
CommunicationRambles past timeClear, on time, checks in with the interviewer

Write down the lowest row. Fix only that next time.

How AllthingsPM does this. Steps 1 to 5 are exactly what the JD mock automates: it reads the posting, writes the role-specific question, plays the interviewer's follow-ups and returns a score. Use the template to understand what the tool is doing, then let the tool do the 45 minutes of setup so you spend your time answering.

Which job description lines predict which PM interview rounds?

Most PM loops mix product sense, analytical or metrics, execution, technical and behavioral rounds. The posting tells you the weighting. A role whose first three bullets are about "experimentation" and "funnels" will lean analytical. A role that asks you to "work with research to ship model capabilities" will add an AI product or technical round.

AI PM postings add their own signals. In our corpus of 335 AI-native PM postings, classic PM craft appears in 89 percent, technical fluency in 88 percent, AI UX and human oversight in 78 percent and agents and agentic architecture in 74 percent [4]. If your JD mentions agents, evals or deployment, expect questions such as how you would define success for an agent, or when you would put a human approval step in the flow.

How AllthingsPM does this. Once you know the rounds, drill them. The question bank holds 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with its own page and answer guide, and a page per company such as Anthropic. For AI roles, the course chapter on the AI PM interview loop covers how evals, model limits and cost show up in answers, including the AI product sense round.

Can you use ChatGPT for a job description mock interview?

Yes, with setup. A good prompt is: "You are the hiring manager for this role. Here is the job description: [paste]. Ask me one interview question at a time, the kind this role would ask. After each answer, ask one hard follow-up, then score me from 1 to 4 on structure, relevance to the JD, depth, metrics and communication."

Two limits. You have to paste the setup every time, and chat models tend to be kind: OpenAI rolled back a 2025 ChatGPT update for being "overly flattering or agreeable" [6]. Score yourself with the rubric above as well, and do at least one mock with a human before a final loop.

How AllthingsPM does this. The JD mock is built for this one job, so there is no prompt to write and the interview plays out the same way every time: role-specific question, follow-ups on your weak spots, a score, a saved transcript. You spend the half hour answering, not configuring.

How should you use the same JD after the mock?

Use it three more times.

  1. Resume. Run a resume review against the same JD so every story you told in the mock is on the page, and the interviewer's questions about your resume land on your best material.
  2. Questions to ask them. Jobscan notes that most interviewers expect you to have questions prepared [3]. Pull two from the [C] context lines: team structure and how success is measured in the first six months.
  3. More roles like it. If the role fits, Resume Job Match finds similar live openings, and each can become its own mock.

How AllthingsPM does this. The mock, the resume review and the job search all run from one account and one JD, so your prep stays consistent from application to final round.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for a job description mock interview

The job description is the best signal you have about the interview, and AllthingsPM is built around it.

  • The whole interview comes from your posting. Paste it and you get a role-specific question, follow-ups on your weak spots and a score, in text or voice.
  • Free every day. One full JD mock a day costs nothing. Interviews by AI, a general tool that also generates questions from a JD, gives 3 free questions a month, with unlimited questions at $9 a month [7].
  • Built for PMs. 4,122 real PM questions from 260 companies with answer guides, 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies with ready-made mocks, and an AI PM course built from 604 real job postings.
  • One place for the whole loop. Resume review against the same JD and Resume Job Match sit next to the mock.

General tools such as Interviews by AI and AIApply also generate questions from a pasted job description [7][8], and they are fine for extra reps. None of them pairs the mock with a PM question bank, live PM roles and a course. For $20 a month, or free once a day, AllthingsPM gives you the whole loop. Start your free JD mock.

Your next interview is for one specific role, so rehearse that role. Open AllthingsPM, paste the posting, and run your first scored mock today, free.
