Public sector AI PMs start at the desk where the work happens.

The Anthropic Product Manager, Public Sector role pays $305,000 to $385,000, is based in Washington, DC or remote with travel, and asks for a PM who can walk into a government agency, watch public servants work, and put Claude in the production path of that work. AllthingsPM holds it in its jobs catalog alongside four sibling roles: three at Scale AI and one at Sierra. Each of the five has a scored mock interview built from its own posting, so you can rehearse the exact role before you apply.

AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. Below is what all five postings ask for, what they pay where the company publishes pay, and how the three companies differ.

Which public sector AI PM roles are open at Anthropic, Scale AI and Sierra?

We pulled every posting with "public sector" in the title from the AllthingsPM catalog on 29 September 2026, then checked each one against the company's live job board the same day. All five were still listed [1][2][3].

What does the Anthropic Product Manager, Public Sector role actually do?

Anthropic frames the work around consequential government jobs: "deciding benefits claims, getting veterans to care, investigating financial misconduct, running unemployment insurance" [1]. The posting says Claude is already in daily use across major US agencies and states, and the PM's job is to find the next workflow where it belongs.

Three details make this posting unusual.

The portfolio is a set of governments, not a feature area. Anthropic hires across civilian, state and local, govtech and national security portfolios and matches you to one on background and interest. You would be among the first PMs on the team, with a dedicated engineering and research group.

Judgment beats domain credentials. The posting says it weighs "product judgment above any domain credential" and asks you to point to "something you built that was your idea: it came from watching people work." Government experience is a plus, not a gate.

Public sector work feeds the commercial roadmap. One responsibility is to spot government needs worth generalizing, and the posting notes that many of Anthropic's commercial features started as public sector customer problems. It also asks the PM to help navigate government compliance regimes and to partner with cloud and integration partners.

The hard requirement is citizenship status: you must be a US person, because of Anthropic's agreements with the US government. A TS/SCI clearance is listed as a plus relevant to only some roles, and travel runs up to 25%.

Context helps here. In August 2025 the General Services Administration announced a OneGov deal that offered Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government to all three branches of the US government for $1, and GSA said Claude for Government supports FedRAMP High workloads [4]. That is the scale of deployment this PM inherits.

How AllthingsPM does this. Open the Anthropic public sector posting and start the mock: it will press on discovery stories, compliance tradeoffs and how you would generalize one agency's need. The Anthropic company hub collects every Anthropic question we hold, and our Anthropic PM job descriptions guide covers the rest of the company's PM postings.

How is Scale AI's Forward Deployed PM, Public Sector role different?

Scale AI's US role is the most specialised of the five. It says so plainly: "This is not a roadmap PM, a CSM, or a solutions engineer" [2]. The PM owns outcomes across two areas: military planning, and a real-time AI and alerting product the posting calls LUX.

The must-haves are strict:

  • An active Top Secret clearance (TS/SCI eligibility preferred).
  • 6+ years in product management, technical program management or customer-facing product ownership.
  • Direct experience with the US Department of War or the wider national security community.
  • Working knowledge of either the Joint Planning Process and modeling tools such as AFSIM, or real-time streaming systems, with enough to speak credibly to the other.
  • A record of shipping AI or data products into constrained or classified organizations: "not pilots or proofs-of-concept."

The posting also asks the PM to tell "a customer's stated request, their actual problem, and what the platform should do" apart, and to decide whether the product or the execution is the real blocker. That is a product sense skill you can practise out of uniform.

The military planning work connects to Thunderforge, the Defense Innovation Unit program Scale AI announced in March 2025 to bring AI agents into US military planning, with initial deployments at Indo-Pacific Command and European Command [5].

Nice-to-haves include agentic capabilities, RLHF and fine-tuning workflows, model evaluation pipelines, streaming tools like Kafka, Flink or Kinesis, and prior forward-deployed or military experience.

How AllthingsPM does this. The Forward Deployed PM mock is built from these exact must-haves, so it will ask you to name the customer, the scale and the integration behind a production launch. For more on the company, read our Scale AI PM roles breakdown and the Scale AI company hub.

What do Scale AI's Global Public Sector roles in Doha, Dubai and Riyadh ask for?

The two Global Public Sector postings share one body of text. The team serves "governments and government-backed entities outside of the United States," building custom AI applications, custom LLMs and training data, and the About section names the Government of Qatar as a customer [3].

The responsibilities read like a forward-deployed builder role:

  • Lead design workshops with the client to define custom AI solutions.
  • Scope new AI use cases across government entities.
  • Lead engineers, ML engineers and operators through building applications and custom LLMs.
  • Scope model evaluation sets and performance requirements, review results, and iterate.
  • Give regular progress updates to the client and to leadership.

The listed minimum qualifications are only two: "Deep curiosity and excitement about building AI applications" and a "mission-driven mindset." Everything else sits under nice-to-haves: Python, Arabic written and spoken, 4+ years building products with AI product work in the last 1 to 2 years, a STEM background, and experience with vibe coding tools such as Replit, Lovable or Bolt.

This is the most accessible door on the list if you have shipped AI products and can work in the region. It also asks the most hands-on build skills, so a prototype you made yourself carries weight.

How AllthingsPM does this. Both postings have their own mock (Doha and Dubai, Riyadh). The AI PM course covers the eval design these roles keep naming, from test sets to acceptance thresholds.

What does Sierra's public sector Agent PM do?

Sierra's role is an Agent Development PM for government. Sierra says it received FedRAMP High certification and is building its founding public sector team; its June 2026 announcement says it can run agents across voice, chat and email in 58 languages [6]. FedRAMP High is the baseline for the government's most sensitive unclassified cloud data [7].

The posting's example projects are concrete [8]:

  • Agents that help people understand eligibility, apply for benefits and check case status.
  • Secure reporting flows for fraud, waste and abuse.
  • Voice and chat agents for licenses, permits, taxes and public records.
  • Long-horizon agents that guide citizens through multi-step processes.
  • Turning patterns in constituent conversations into insights for officials.

The asks match Sierra's other Agent PM roles: 5 to 7+ years building technical products, Senior PM level or above, direct customer work, tailoring messages for executives, and explaining AI to technical and non-technical audiences. Plus-points include evals, retrieval, prompt engineering, government procurement and accessibility knowledge, and some React, TypeScript and Go. Sierra says it is explicitly nonpartisan.

How do the three companies compare on what they want?

Read side by side, the five postings share a spine and split on three axes.

Shared spine. Every posting asks for discovery with real users, done in the field. Anthropic wants ideas "that came out of the room." Scale AI wants workshops and end-user feedback. Sierra calls ground-up discovery "a critical part of the role." Every posting also names model evaluation in some form.

Axis 1: clearance. Only Scale AI's US role requires one. Anthropic lists a TS/SCI clearance as relevant for some roles only, and Sierra's posting does not mention clearance.

Axis 2: product surface. Anthropic owns government models and offerings plus the agency workflows on top. Scale AI builds bespoke applications, custom LLMs and military planning tools. Sierra builds citizen-facing customer service agents.

Axis 3: build skill. Scale AI's Gulf roles and Sierra name coding. Anthropic names none, and Scale AI's US role asks only for enough technical fluency to discuss architecture with a platform engineer.

How AllthingsPM does this. Two questions from the AllthingsPM question bank fit all three companies: shipping a government workflow inside an existing compliance boundary and preparing a government AI application for strict deployment requirements. Each has an answer guide and a practice button.

How should you prepare for a public sector AI PM interview?

Work from the overlap first, then the specifics.

  1. Write two discovery stories. One where you watched people work and found the real problem, one where you turned a customer request into a product that others used. Anthropic and Scale AI both ask for this almost word for word.
  2. Be ready to design an eval. Pick a government task, such as triaging a benefits claim, and define the test set, the failure you fear most and the acceptance bar.
  3. Learn the compliance vocabulary. Know what FedRAMP High covers and why a classified environment changes deployment. You do not need to be an expert; you need to know which constraint is product and which is policy.
  4. Practise the stakeholder question. Try a senior government stakeholder wants to deploy a model for high-stakes decisions.
  5. Tailor your resume to one posting. Run it through the resume review against a JD so the evidence the posting asks for is on the first page.

How AllthingsPM does this. The JD mock turns any of these postings into a scored interview, and Resume Job Match finds more government AI roles that fit your background.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for public sector AI PM prep

Public sector AI PM roles are rare and specific. A generic mock about designing an alarm clock will not prepare you for questions on compliance boundaries, clearance-constrained deployment or benefits-claim workflows. You need practice built from the posting itself.

AllthingsPM holds all five postings covered here, and each has a mock built from its own requirements, in text or voice, with follow-ups and a score. Around the mocks sit the pieces the roles keep asking for: an AI PM course built from 604 real PM job postings that teaches evals and agents, 4,122 real interview questions from 260 companies with answer guides, resume review against the exact JD, and Resume Job Match to find the next opening. It costs $20 a month or $120 a year, and there is a free tier.

Other prep services offer human coaches and peer communities, and those help with confidence. For practice aimed at a specific Anthropic, Scale AI or Sierra government role, every day, for $20 a month, AllthingsPM is the better fit. Browse the jobs catalog and start with the role you want most.
