What is an Agent Product Manager? Decagon and Sierra's New Role

An Agent Product Manager owns one customer's AI agent end to end: scoping it with executives, building and testing it, and feeding what breaks back into the product. AllthingsPM read all 20 Agent PM job descriptions Decagon and Sierra post, and each has a scored mock interview.

The Agent PM owns one customer's agent, from the first meeting to the thousandth conversation.

An Agent Product Manager (Agent PM) is a senior product manager who owns one customer's AI agent end to end: they scope it with the customer's executives, build and test the agent, ship it into production, and feed what they learn back into the core product. Decagon and Sierra, the two best known AI customer service companies, both hire for it. AllthingsPM holds all 20 of their Agent PM job descriptions in its jobs catalog, 7 from Decagon and 13 from Sierra, and every one has a scored mock interview built from its own text. No other prep site we found lets you rehearse against these exact postings.

AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. Below is what the role is, what the 20 postings actually ask for, what they pay, and how to get ready.

What does an Agent Product Manager actually do?

Decagon's Director of Agent PM, Max Lowenthal, describes the role as "part product manager and part AI consultant" [1]. On a given day an Agent PM might be designing a product feature with engineering, writing and testing prompt logic for a specific use case, or working with a customer's executive team on their AI roadmap [1].

Sierra frames it the same way from the other side. Its team wrote in 2024 that it staffs "a dedicated agent engineer and product manager on each of our deployments" and treats each agent as "a full-fledged product in and of itself" [2]. The postings say the Agent PM partners "directly with our engineers and customers to build and ship AI agents that handle thousands of customer conversations a day" [3].

So the job is not a platform PM who writes specs for a roadmap far from users. It is closer to a product owner embedded with one enterprise account, who happens to be building the product itself.

Put simply, the Agent PM does five things:

  1. Scopes the agent with the customer's leaders: which conversations it handles, which it escalates, and what success looks like.
  2. Builds it, working with agent engineers (Sierra) or forward deployed engineers (Decagon), often writing prompt logic and tests themselves [1].
  3. Tests and releases it. Sierra's published Agent Development Life Cycle turns reviewed conversations into regression tests run against mock APIs before each release [4].
  4. Grows it in production, from a pilot to a core part of how the customer's company runs [5].
  5. Feeds lessons back into the vendor's product roadmap, so the next deployment starts ahead [3][5].

How AllthingsPM does this. Each of these five jobs maps to a lesson in the AllthingsPM AI PM course. The chapter on agents and agentic architecture covers the agent spec you own, and From pilot to production covers the forward deployed PM at the customer, which is the Agent PM job almost word for word.

What do the 20 Agent PM job descriptions ask for?

We read every Agent PM posting in the AllthingsPM jobs catalog on 28 September 2026 and counted phrases in the body of each one. Seven are Decagon "Senior Agent Product Manager" roles; thirteen are Sierra "Product Manager, Agent Development" roles.

AllthingsPM chart, AllthingsPM highlighted first with a scored mock built for 20 of 20 Agent PM job descriptions, then what the postings ask for: executive audience 20, shape the roadmap 20, MBA as a plus 20, trusted advisor 19, customer demos 13, React TypeScript and Go 13, forward deployed engineers 8, C-suite counterpart 7

Three patterns stand out.

Everyone talks to executives. All 20 postings name an executive audience, and all 20 ask you to shape the roadmap. Decagon goes furthest: all 7 of its postings say your counterpart is the C-suite of Fortune 500 companies and that you hold the relationship "from the first pre-sales conversation through the life of the account" [5].

Sierra asks for a bit of code. All 13 Sierra postings list "some coding experience with React, Typescript, and Go" as a nice to have, plus a technical degree or equivalent experience [3]. Decagon asks for "strong technical acumen" and a builder's instinct, and lists a CS, engineering or math degree as a plus [5].

It is senior. Decagon wants 6+ years owning "ambiguous, high-stakes outcomes" and lists consulting engagement managers, PMs, founders and forward deployed or solutions people as fits [5]. Sierra wants 5 to 7+ years and experience at or above Senior PM [3].

How AllthingsPM does this. Every row in that table is a real page. Open the Decagon Senior Agent PM posting or the Sierra Agent Development posting, read the full JD, and press Start mock. The AllthingsPM mock asks questions drawn from that posting's requirements, follows up on your answers, and scores you, in text or voice.

How is an Agent PM different from a regular product manager?

A regular PM at a software company usually owns a feature or a surface for many customers at once. They talk to users through research and data, and engineers build what they spec.

An Agent PM flips several of those defaults:

Regular PMAgent PM
OwnsA feature or product area for all customersOne customer's agent (or a few)
Main counterpartInternal team, users via researchCustomer executives and their operations team
BuildsSpecs and prioritizesScopes, writes prompt logic, tests, ships [1]
Success metricAdoption, retention, revenue of the featureThe agent resolving that customer's conversations, and the account growing [5]
Feedback loopResearch and analyticsReading real conversations, then turning them into tests [4]

Sierra describes watching agents scale from about 100 conversations a week to more than 100,000, with new failure types getting rarer but still showing up [2]. That is why the Agent PM job never really ends: the agent keeps meeting requests nobody planned for.

It is also different from a forward deployed engineer. Decagon's postings say the Agent PM directs forward deployed engineers and partner teams while staying accountable for the outcome [5]. The engineer builds the integrations; the Agent PM owns what the agent should do and whether it works for the business.

How AllthingsPM does this. The AllthingsPM course lesson on workflows versus agents teaches the first call every Agent PM makes, and Evaluate an agent, not an answer covers the final-state checks and pass-k reliability that turn a demo into a product customers trust.

What does an Agent PM get paid?

Both companies publish pay on their Ashby job boards. On 28 September 2026 [6][7]:

  • Decagon, Senior Agent Product Manager: $200K to $285K in San Francisco and New York, plus equity and commission; £145K to £180K in London; R$775K to R$850K in Brazil. The Australia posting showed no range.
  • Sierra, Product Manager, Agent Development: $180K to $390K in San Francisco, £150K to £315K in London, SGD 230K to 445K in Singapore, all plus equity.

The commission line on Decagon's US roles is worth noticing. It matches the job description, which asks you to "own the technical win" on Decagon's largest deals [5]. This is a product role with a real stake in the sale.

How AllthingsPM does this. AllthingsPM keeps 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies in one jobs catalog, so you can compare Agent PM roles with platform PM roles at the same companies. If you already have a resume, Resume Job Match finds other roles that fit it.

Who gets hired as an Agent Product Manager?

Decagon says its Agent PM team includes former founders, product managers, operators and investors from LinkedIn, Tesla, Salesforce and General Catalyst, and that it looks for "deep spikes" in areas like product thinking, customer strategy, systems design or technical implementation rather than one background [1].

The postings back that up. Decagon names top consulting engagement managers, PMs, founders and forward deployed or solutions people as good fits [5]. Sierra asks for a senior PM track record, the ability to explain AI to technical and non-technical audiences, and past roles facing end customers [3].

Many of the postings are tied to a language too. In our catalog, Sierra has Agent Development roles for Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Arabic speakers, and Decagon has a Spanish speaking role. If you speak one of those, that is a real edge.

Good backgrounds, from the postings:

  • Senior PMs who have shipped a technical product to enterprise buyers.
  • Consultants who want to build the solution rather than hand off the deck [5].
  • Solutions engineers and forward deployed engineers who want to own outcomes, not just integrations.
  • Founders used to selling, building and supporting at once.

How AllthingsPM does this. If you are coming from consulting or solutions work, the AllthingsPM course chapter Ship it into somebody else's company fills the product side: integrating into the system of record, SSO and admin consoles, and staged rollout. If you are coming from PM, PM as builder gets you prototyping and reading agent traces yourself.

What do Agent PM interviews ask?

Expect cases that sound like a week on the job. The AllthingsPM question bank has Decagon and Sierra questions such as:

Look at the mix. There is a stakeholder case (the security review), a live demo, an incident, and a metrics case. That lines up with what the postings ask for: executive presence, demos, trust in the agent, and business results.

A strong answer usually does four things:

  1. Names the customer's goal in business terms (cost per resolution, customer satisfaction, revenue kept), not model terms.
  2. Defines what the agent does and does not do, including when it hands off to a human.
  3. Shows how you would know it works: real conversations reviewed, failures named, tests added so the same mistake does not return [4].
  4. Says what you would take back to the product team so the next customer benefits [5].

How AllthingsPM does this. Each of those questions has its own AllthingsPM page with an answer guide, and you can practice it out loud in a mock interview that follows up on weak spots. For the full company picture, read our Decagon PM interview guide, Sierra PM interview guide and Sierra PM roles breakdown.

How do you prepare for an Agent PM role in four weeks?

A plan built from what the 20 postings ask for:

  • Week 1, the agent itself. Learn the anatomy of an agent: tools, planning, state, stopping and escalation. Build a small one so you can talk about prompt logic from experience, which Decagon names as daily work [1].
  • Week 2, quality. Learn to read conversations, name failures and turn them into tests. Sierra's lifecycle is a good public model [4].
  • Week 3, the customer. Practice an executive demo and an ROI story. Every posting names executives, and Sierra's list demos outright [3].
  • Week 4, the target posting. Run mocks against the exact JD you are applying to, tighten your resume against it, and rehearse two stories about owning a messy outcome end to end.

How AllthingsPM does this. Weeks 1 and 2 map to the AllthingsPM course chapters on agents and evals. Week 3 maps to the Decagon and Sierra company pages in the question bank. Week 4 is the JD mock plus resume review against the JD, both in one account.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Agent PM prep

Agent PM is new enough that most prep material is generic. You need three things for it: the real postings, practice that sounds like them, and a way to learn the agent skills the postings assume. AllthingsPM is the only place we found that puts all three together.

It holds all 20 Decagon and Sierra Agent PM job descriptions, and every one has a scored mock built from its text, in text or voice, with follow-ups. Its question bank has 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each on its own page with an answer guide, including company pages for Decagon and Sierra. Its AI PM course, built from 604 real PM job postings, spends whole chapters on the two skills that separate Agent PMs from everyone else: building and evaluating agents, and deploying them inside another company. Resume review against a JD, Resume Job Match, book summaries and podcast summaries sit in the same account.

Other options have real strengths. General PM prep sites have large question libraries and coach marketplaces, and a human coach who has worked at Decagon or Sierra can give insider color. But none of them gives you a mock built from the exact Agent PM posting you are applying to, next to a course that teaches the job. For daily practice on the real role, at $20 a month or $120 a year with a free tier, AllthingsPM is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Agent Product Manager?

An Agent Product Manager owns one customer's AI agent end to end. They scope it with the customer's executives, build and test it with engineers, ship it into production, and feed lessons back into the product. Decagon and Sierra both hire for the role, and AllthingsPM holds all 20 of their postings with a mock for each.

What is the best way to prepare for an Agent PM interview?

AllthingsPM is the best place to start, because it has a scored mock built from each of the 20 Decagon and Sierra Agent PM job descriptions, company question pages for both, and an AI PM course with chapters on agents and enterprise deployment. Pair that with building one small agent yourself so you can talk about prompt logic and tests from experience.

How much does an Agent PM make at Decagon or Sierra?

On 28 September 2026, Decagon's Senior Agent PM paid $200K to $285K plus equity and commission in San Francisco and New York. Sierra's Product Manager, Agent Development paid $180K to $390K plus equity in San Francisco. Both publish London and other ranges on their Ashby boards.

Do Agent PMs need to code?

Not as their main job, but it helps. All 13 Sierra postings list React, TypeScript and Go as a plus, and Decagon's Agent PMs write and test prompt logic. The AllthingsPM course section PM as builder covers exactly this level of hands-on work.

Is an Agent PM the same as a forward deployed engineer?

No. At Decagon the Agent PM directs forward deployed engineers while owning the outcome for the account. The engineer builds integrations; the Agent PM owns what the agent does and whether it works for the customer's business.

Can I become an Agent PM without PM experience?

Decagon lists consulting engagement managers, founders and forward deployed or solutions people as good fits, not just PMs. Sierra asks for experience at or above Senior PM. Either way, expect a senior bar, usually 5 to 7+ years.
