What this question tests
Everyday product sense, checking whether you can articulate specific design reasoning rather than surface-level preference.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific, everyday product, ideally something with a clear, nameable design decision rather than a broad category.
- State the specific feature you appreciate, being precise about what it does and when you use it.
- Explain why that design choice works well, connecting it to a broader principle like reducing steps, providing feedback, or anticipating a need.
- Consider what alternative design the product could have chosen instead, and why the chosen approach is better.
- Mention any minor limitation or tradeoff of that same feature, showing balanced thinking.
- Keep the answer concrete and grounded in real personal use rather than generic praise.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific, nameable feature and mechanism, not just 'it's well designed' in general terms.
- Explains the underlying design principle, like reducing friction at the moment of use, connecting a personal preference to broader product thinking.
- Considers a plausible alternative design and explains why the actual choice works better, showing critical comparison.
- Notes an honest tradeoff or limitation, avoiding pure praise with no nuance.
Common mistakes
- Naming a product with only vague praise like 'it just works well' with no specific mechanism.
- Choosing an example with no clear, explainable design decision behind it.
- Giving no critical perspective at all.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you change about that same product if you could?
- What's a competing product's approach to that same problem that you think is worse, and why?
