What this question tests
How you handle a public, high-visibility complaint and balance the customer, the team, and the company's reputation.
How to approach it
- Situation: describe the forum post, the specific .Net issue raised, and why the public threat to switch platforms raised urgency.
- Task: explain your responsibility as the PM to both resolve the technical issue and manage the public narrative.
- Action: describe replying publicly and quickly to acknowledge the issue, then moving details to a private channel to diagnose the root cause with engineering.
- Action: explain how you prioritized a fix or workaround, and how you kept the customer updated on progress rather than going silent.
- Result: state the outcome, such as the customer staying on the platform and the fix shipping, and what you changed in the escalation process afterward.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows speed: acknowledging publicly within hours, not days, to prevent the thread from escalating further.
- Shows judgment in separating what to say publicly (empathy, timeline) from what to route privately (account details, logs).
- Names a concrete process change, like a documented escalation path for forum complaints that reach a severity threshold.
- Closes the loop by posting a public update once fixed, turning a negative thread into visible responsiveness.
Common mistakes
- Only describing the technical fix and skipping the customer communication and public perception angle.
- Vague claims like 'I resolved it quickly' with no specifics on actions taken.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you have handled it if the fix took weeks, not days?
- What would you do differently if the customer was a top enterprise account?
