What this question tests
Conflict resolution skill and ability to align cross-functional groups with competing priorities.
How to approach it
- Situation: describe the specific conflict, like engineering and design disagreeing on scope or marketing and product disagreeing on timing.
- Task: clarify your role in mediating or resolving the disagreement, especially if you lacked direct authority over either group.
- Action: describe how you identified the underlying interests behind each group's position, not just the surface disagreement.
- Action: explain the resolution approach, like data-driven trade-off discussion, a shared decision framework, or an escalation when needed.
- Result: state the outcome and how the relationship or process improved afterward.
What a strong answer includes
- Focuses on interests behind positions, e.g. engineering wanted scope cut due to timeline risk, not just 'they disagreed.'
- Shows a concrete resolution mechanism, like a joint trade-off session with data, rather than simply 'we talked it out.'
- Notes when escalation was appropriate versus when peer-to-peer resolution worked, showing judgment.
- Describes a lasting process change, like a recurring sync, that prevented repeat conflicts.
Common mistakes
- Describing the conflict without explaining the actual resolution mechanism used.
- Taking full credit without acknowledging the other groups' valid concerns.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you have done if the conflict couldn't be resolved at your level?
- How do you prevent similar conflicts going forward?
