What this question tests
Risk management maturity: whether the candidate has a repeatable process for spotting and reducing risk in product decisions, not just luck.
How to approach it
- State that risk mitigation starts before the decision, by naming the biggest assumptions a launch depends on.
- Describe how you validate risky assumptions early and cheaply, such as a prototype, a small user test, or a phased rollout.
- Explain staged rollout practices: feature flags, percentage rollouts, and holdout groups to limit blast radius if something goes wrong.
- Cover monitoring: what dashboards or alerts you set up to catch a regression quickly after launch.
- Describe a rollback or kill switch plan agreed before launch, not improvised after a problem appears.
What a strong answer includes
- Gives a concrete example, such as shipping a risky pricing change to 5 percent of users first with a clear guardrail metric.
- Distinguishes reversible from irreversible decisions and applies more rigor to the irreversible ones, echoing Amazon's one way versus two way door framing.
- Mentions cross functional review, legal, security, or trust and safety, for risks a PM alone cannot fully evaluate.
Common mistakes
- Describing risk mitigation only in the abstract without a concrete example.
- Forgetting the rollback plan, which is often the actual safety net.
Likely follow-up questions
- Tell me about a time a risk you identified still turned into a real problem.
- How do you decide which risks are worth a formal review versus your own judgment?
