What this question tests
Tests the ability to tell a structured, STAR-shaped story showing end-to-end ownership, from scoping through launch and measurement.
How to approach it
- Pick a project you owned from initial scoping through launch, not just one phase of a larger effort someone else drove.
- Set the situation: the problem, the team involved, and why it mattered to the business.
- State your specific task and role, distinguishing what you owned from what others (design, engineering) owned.
- Walk through the actions in order: scoping and prioritization, working with cross-functional partners, and handling a real obstacle that came up.
- State the result with a concrete metric and a clear before-versus-after comparison.
- Close with what you learned or would do differently next time.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a project with a real, non-trivial obstacle in the middle, showing judgment under pressure, not a smooth story with no friction.
- Clearly separates personal ownership from team credit, using I for your decisions and we for team execution.
- States a concrete result metric rather than a vague it went well.
- Reflects honestly on a tradeoff or mistake made along the way, which signals self-awareness.
Common mistakes
- Describing a project where the candidate's actual role is unclear or minor.
- Giving no measurable outcome at the end.
- Skipping obstacles entirely, making the story sound implausibly smooth.
Likely follow-up questions
- What was the biggest obstacle and how did you resolve it?
- What would you do differently if you ran it again?
- How did you handle disagreement with a stakeholder during this project?
