What this question tests
Whether the candidate can show real self-awareness and a growth response to criticism, not just recount a painful moment.
How to approach it
- Situation: briefly set up the context, for example a launch review or a peer/manager feedback session.
- Task: state clearly what the feedback was, specifically and honestly, without softening it or deflecting blame.
- Action: describe your immediate reaction briefly, then focus most of the story on what you did afterward to address it.
- Show a concrete behavior change, such as a new habit or process you adopted as a direct result of that feedback.
- Result: state the measurable or observable outcome of that change, and what you'd still improve today.
What a strong answer includes
- States the actual harsh feedback specifically and honestly instead of a vague, softened version.
- Spends most of the story on the concrete change made afterward, not on the emotional reaction.
- Shows the change stuck by citing a later, different situation where the new behavior was applied.
Common mistakes
- Picking feedback that is actually a humblebrag, like 'I work too hard'.
- Focusing on how painful the feedback felt without showing a concrete behavior change.
Likely follow-up questions
- How did you know the change was actually working?
- Has anyone given you similar feedback since then?
