What this question tests
Behavioral and ethical judgment: standing by a quality conviction under deadline pressure while working constructively within a team.
How to approach it
- Set the Situation: describe the product, the deadline pressure, and specifically why you believed it wasn't ready.
- Explain the Task: your responsibility to raise this concern, even if it wasn't a popular position.
- Describe the Action: how you raised the concern with data or specific risks, rather than just a gut feeling, and proposed alternatives like a phased launch.
- State the Result: what actually happened, whether the launch was delayed, shipped as-is, or a compromise was found.
- Reflect on how you balanced conviction with respecting the final team or leadership decision.
What a strong answer includes
- Grounds the concern in specific evidence, like known bugs or missing critical functionality, not just a vague feeling.
- Proposes a constructive alternative, like a phased or limited launch, rather than simply blocking the release.
- Shows respect for the final decision-making process even if the outcome wasn't what you initially wanted.
- States a concrete result, showing what actually happened and what was learned from it.
Common mistakes
- Describing yourself as unilaterally blocking a launch with no collaborative path proposed.
- No specific evidence given for why the product was believed to be incomplete.
- No honest resolution described, avoiding what actually happened.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you have done if leadership overruled your concern?
- How do you decide when a concern is serious enough to escalate?
