What this question tests
Ability to speak credibly to technical trade offs as a PM, and to explain a solution clearly using the STAR structure.
How to approach it
- Situation: set up a real technical problem, for example an API integration that broke a launch, with the business stakes.
- Task: state your role, for example being the one who had to unblock engineering while managing stakeholder timelines.
- Action: explain the diagnosis process, working with engineers to isolate the root cause, say a rate limit or schema mismatch.
- Action: describe the trade off decision you made, like a quick workaround for launch versus the proper fix afterward.
- Result: state the concrete outcome, such as launch shipped on time and the permanent fix landed two weeks later.
- Confirm with the interviewer whether they want a technical deep dive or a focus on how you managed the process.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows genuine technical fluency, using specific terms like rate limits, schema, and latency rather than vague language.
- Clarifies the PM's actual contribution, diagnosis and trade off call and stakeholder communication, versus what engineering did.
- Names a measurable result, for example zero delay to the launch date.
- Reflects on what would prevent the issue next time, like adding monitoring or a contract test.
Common mistakes
- Taking credit for engineering's technical work instead of clarifying the PM's role.
- Choosing a problem that is not actually technical, like a scheduling conflict.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you have done differently to catch this earlier?
- How did you decide the workaround was safe to ship?
