What this question tests
Tests accountability and how the candidate handles a teammate missing a deliverable, not just who's to blame.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific instance where someone you depended on missed a task and deadline.
- Explain why the task mattered and what you assumed about their clarity or capacity.
- Describe how you diagnosed the cause: unclear priority, being blocked, or competing work.
- Explain the action you took: re-scoped, paired with them, or escalated.
- State the outcome and what you changed in how you assign or follow up on tasks.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a concrete cause, like ambiguous acceptance criteria, not 'they were lazy.'
- Shows the candidate examining their own role before escalating.
- Describes a proportionate response: coaching first, escalation later.
- Ends with a durable process change, like a written definition of done.
Common mistakes
- Blaming the other person entirely with no self-reflection.
- A vague story with no concrete task or timeline.
- No follow-through change described.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do differently if it happened again?
- How did this affect your relationship with that person?
- How do you now track commitments to avoid this?
