What this question tests
Product sense and genuine curiosity, checking whether you can articulate why a product works, not just that you like it.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific product, ideally one relevant to the interviewer's domain or a lesser-known example that shows original thinking.
- State the specific problem it solves for you personally, being concrete about the moment or use case.
- Explain the design or product decision that stands out, for example a specific interaction or default that removes friction.
- Connect that decision to a broader product principle, such as reducing decision fatigue or building trust through transparency.
- Mention one limitation or tradeoff the product accepted knowingly, showing critical thinking, not just praise.
- Keep the answer tight and specific rather than a general feature list.
What a strong answer includes
- Chooses a product with a clear, nameable mechanism, for example a specific default setting or flow, not just 'it's well designed'.
- Ties the appreciation to a product principle, like reducing friction at the moment of highest intent, showing analytical thinking.
- Notes an honest tradeoff or limitation the product accepted, showing balanced judgment rather than pure fandom.
- Keeps the story personal and specific, describing an actual use moment rather than generic praise.
Common mistakes
- Naming a product with only generic praise like 'it's simple and easy to use' with no specific mechanism.
- Choosing an obvious, overused example without a fresh angle.
- Giving no critical perspective at all, sounding like marketing copy.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you change about that product if you could?
- What's a product decision they made that you disagree with?
