What this question tests
Behavioral: stakeholder communication and requirement-gathering skills under real ambiguity with an external client.
How to approach it
- Set the Situation: describe the client, the project, and specifically what was unclear or conflicting in requirements.
- Explain the Task: what you needed to deliver and why the misunderstanding put it at risk.
- Describe the Action: how you clarified scope, such as running a structured requirements workshop or writing a shared spec.
- State the Result: the outcome, ideally with a concrete number like reduced rework or an on-time delivery.
- Note what you would confirm with the interviewer if the story needs a specific client or product context.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses a specific real disagreement (e.g. client wanted feature X, but meant a different underlying need) rather than a vague conflict.
- Shows initiative: proactively scheduling a call or writing a one-page requirements doc rather than waiting to be told.
- Quantifies the result, such as cutting revision cycles from three to one.
- Reflects on what was learned about eliciting requirements, not just that the conflict was resolved.
Common mistakes
- Telling a story where the conflict was with a teammate, not a client.
- No measurable outcome or clear resolution.
- Blaming the client instead of showing ownership of the miscommunication.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do differently next time?
- How do you now prevent this kind of misunderstanding upfront?
- How did the client react to your approach?
