What this question tests
Whether the candidate understands the practical, day-to-day working relationship between PM and engineering, not just abstract collaboration values.
How to approach it
- Think from the engineer's daily experience: they need clear, well-scoped problems, not just a list of features to build.
- Identify a concrete need: context on the 'why' behind a requirement, so engineers can make good tradeoffs when edge cases arise mid-build.
- Identify another need: protection from constant scope changes mid-sprint, and a PM who pushes back on stakeholders to keep the team focused.
- Identify a relational need: technical respect, meaning the PM listens to engineering input on feasibility and timeline rather than dictating both.
- Ground the answer in a specific example of how you've provided one of these things in practice.
What a strong answer includes
- Names specific, concrete needs (context on why, protection from scope creep, respect for technical input) rather than vague 'good communication'.
- Backs at least one point with a real example of doing this in practice.
- Shows understanding that engineers want autonomy on how to solve a well-scoped problem, not just a spec to execute.
Common mistakes
- Giving a generic answer about 'collaboration' and 'respect' without specifics.
- Describing the relationship only from the PM's perspective without genuinely considering the engineer's viewpoint.
Likely follow-up questions
- Can you give an example of a time you protected the team from scope creep?
- How do you handle disagreement with engineering over technical feasibility?
