What this question tests
Tests the candidate's own mental model of the PM role: whether they can articulate a clear point of view instead of reciting a textbook definition.
How to approach it
- Pick one core belief, such as 'ruthless prioritization of the right problem' or 'being the voice of the user internally,' rather than listing every PM responsibility.
- Explain why this matters more than the other common answers (execution, technical skill, stakeholder management).
- Back it with a concrete example from the candidate's own experience where this belief drove a decision.
- Acknowledge the other skills briefly, showing the answer is a considered priority, not ignorance of the rest of the job.
- Tie the belief back to outcomes, such as how prioritizing the right problem led to a better result than shipping fast on the wrong one.
What a strong answer includes
- States one clear, defensible point of view instead of a laundry list of PM responsibilities that says nothing distinctive.
- Supports the belief with a specific story, not just an abstract claim.
- Shows awareness that other skills matter too, framing this as a considered priority rather than a blind spot.
- Connects the belief to a concrete outcome it produced.
Common mistakes
- Giving a textbook definition of product management instead of a genuine point of view.
- Naming a belief with no supporting example from real experience.
Likely follow-up questions
- Can you think of a time this belief led you to make the wrong call?
- How has this view changed over the course of your career?
