What this question tests
Whether you can show resilience and problem-solving through a genuinely difficult challenge, with a clear personal role in overcoming it.
How to approach it
- Pick a challenge that was hard because of real obstacles, like limited resources, pushback, or repeated setbacks, not just a busy period.
- State the Situation and Task: what the challenge was and why overcoming it mattered.
- Describe the Action: the specific steps taken, including any approach that initially failed before you adjusted.
- Show resilience explicitly: how you kept going or changed tactics after an early setback, rather than succeeding on the first attempt.
- Give the Result: the outcome and what it taught you that you've applied since.
- Note what you'd clarify if the interviewer wants a professional versus a personal challenge specifically.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows a genuine obstacle with real risk of failure, not a challenge that was straightforward once identified.
- Includes an initial approach that didn't work, showing adaptability rather than a clean, first-try success.
- Demonstrates a specific resilience behavior, like seeking new input or changing tactics, not just persistence alone.
- Connects the lesson learned to how it changed later behavior, showing lasting growth.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a challenge that was actually straightforward, undermining the claim of real difficulty.
- Describing a smooth, linear success story with no real setback or adjustment along the way.
Likely follow-up questions
- What did you try first that didn't work, and how did you realize you needed to change approach?
