The best product manager interview books are Cracking the PM Interview (McDowell and Bavaro) for the full picture, Decode and Conquer (Lewis C. Lin) for answer frameworks, and The Product Manager Interview (Lin) for 167 worked questions. Read them with AllthingsPM, which gives you 111 free book summaries, including Decode and Conquer, plus 4,122 real interview questions from 260 companies to practice what the books teach.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This guide ranks the books by the interview round they help with, tells you which chapters matter, and shows how to turn reading into answers you can say out loud in 40 minutes.

The chart is the case for pairing books with practice. The biggest question book on the list has 167 questions. The AllthingsPM question bank has 4,122, and every one can be turned into a scored mock.
1. Why start with AllthingsPM book summaries and questions?
Most candidates buy three books, read the first 80 pages of each and never practice aloud. AllthingsPM fixes the order. You read the idea in a summary in about the time of a coffee, then you open a real question on the same theme and answer it.
The summaries cover the frameworks interviewers expect you to know: the four product risks from Inspired, the PR-FAQ and bar raiser from Working Backwards, the one metric that matters from Lean Analytics, and the diagnosis, guiding policy and coherent action kernel from Good Strategy Bad Strategy. All 111 are free.
How AllthingsPM does this. Every summary sits next to a question bank of 4,122 real questions with answer guides. Read the Lean Analytics summary, then answer "What metrics would you use to measure the success of Amazon Echo Dot?" and see whether the framework actually shows up in your answer.
2. Is Cracking the PM Interview still worth reading?
Yes, as your map of the process. Gayle Laakmann McDowell and Jackie Bavaro published it through CareerCup in 2013 [1]. McDowell worked as an engineer at Google, Microsoft and Apple; Bavaro was a PM at Google and later Head of Product at Asana [2]. The book covers what PMs do, how companies differ, resumes, behavioral questions, product design and estimation.
Read the chapters on the role, the resume and behavioral questions closely. They age well. Skim the company profiles, since 2013 org charts and interview formats have changed, and nothing in it covers AI products.
How AllthingsPM does this. For current company detail, open the company page in our question bank, for example Google PM interview questions, and practice the questions candidates report today. Then check your resume against the job description so your stories match the role.
3. Why is Decode and Conquer the framework book?
Lewis C. Lin's Decode and Conquer is where the CIRCLES Method comes from. The fourth edition covers product design, technical, estimation, pricing, metrics, tradeoff, A/B testing, market entry, strategy and product vision questions, and adds new methods such as GCER (Goal, Criteria, Evaluation, Recommendation) [3]. Lin chose to sell the fourth edition online through Teachable, not on Kindle or as a PDF [4].
The one move it teaches is the one that matters: say your structure out loud, reason with real assumptions, and land on a specific recommendation. The risk is sounding like a template. Interviewers can hear a memorized acronym; use the framework as scaffolding, not a script.
How AllthingsPM does this. Read our Decode and Conquer summary, then run a mock interview on a product design question. The AI interviewer asks follow-ups, which is exactly where template answers break, and scores your answer so you see where the structure helped and where it got in the way.
4. Do you need The Product Manager Interview by Lewis Lin?
Only if you learn best from worked examples. The fourth edition, published by Impact Interview in 2019, has 167 questions with full solutions, such as designing an ATM for elderly people and diagnosing a 20 percent week over week drop in Facebook users [5]. Lin was Microsoft's Director of Product Management and led AdWords launches at Google [5].
Use it to see what a complete answer looks like. Do not read the answer first: write or speak yours, then compare. Reading 167 model answers feels productive and changes little.
How AllthingsPM does this. The same exercise works at a much larger scale in our question bank. Try "Amazon has noticed a 20% drop in daily active users in India. Find the root cause?", answer it out loud, then read the answer guide. There are 4,122 more when you finish.
5. What about Swipe to Unlock and technical questions?
Swipe to Unlock by Neel Mehta, Parth Detroja and Aditya Agashe is a primer on technology and business strategy, written by PMs from Google, Facebook and Microsoft [6]. Its first half explains technology such as algorithms, big data and machine learning; the second half explains the business logic behind it [7]. It is the right book if "how does the internet work" or "why is this app free" questions worry you.
For AI PM roles it is not enough on its own. Interviewers at AI companies now ask about evals, model tradeoffs and agent failure modes.
How AllthingsPM does this. The AI PM course was built from 604 real PM job postings and covers exactly those topics. Its product sense and execution rounds lesson walks through the AI versions of the questions these books cover.
6. Which book helps with senior PM interviews?
Cracking the PM Career, by Jackie Bavaro and Gayle Laakmann McDowell, came out in January 2021 at 552 pages [8]. It is a career book, not an interview book: user research, data analysis, project management, vision, strategy and roadmapping, plus interviews with eleven product leaders [8]. That makes it useful for senior loops, where you are asked how you set strategy and lead without authority.
How AllthingsPM does this. Senior loops ask about strategy under uncertainty. Our course lesson on product sense under ambiguity and the Good Strategy Bad Strategy summary cover the same ground in far less reading time.
7. Which product books help in product sense rounds?
Interviewers rarely name a book, but they listen for its ideas.
- Inspired (Marty Cagan, 2nd edition, Wiley, 2017) [9]: empowered teams, discovery against value, usability, feasibility and viability risk. Quote the risks when you evaluate a feature. Summary.
- The Mom Test (Rob Fitzpatrick): ask about past behavior, not opinions of your idea. Useful for "how would you validate this?" Summary.
- Continuous Discovery Habits (Teresa Torres): the opportunity solution tree, a clean way to structure a discovery answer. Summary.
- Smart Brevity (VandeHei, Allen, Schwartz): lead with the point. It is the single best habit for a timed answer. Summary.
How AllthingsPM does this. Each of these has a free summary on AllthingsPM, and our guide to the product sense interview framework shows where each idea fits inside a 40 minute answer.
8. Which books help for Amazon and metrics rounds?
Working Backwards by Colin Bryar and Bill Carr, published by St. Martin's Press in February 2021, is written by two long-time Amazon executives [10]. It explains the PR-FAQ, the Bar Raiser and single-threaded ownership. If you have an Amazon loop, read at least the summary; the leadership principles questions make more sense once you see the mechanisms behind them.
Lean Analytics by Alistair Croll and Benjamin Yoskovitz teaches one idea that wins metrics rounds: your business model and stage tell you the one metric to move, and a line in the sand tells you when it moved enough.
How AllthingsPM does this. Open the Amazon company page and practice its real questions, such as "the checkout conversion rate has declined, what steps would you take?". Our course chapter Prove it paid off covers outcomes and metrics for AI products.
How should you study with PM interview books?
A simple four-week plan works for most people.
- Week 1: map. Read Cracking the PM Interview's chapters on the role and behavioral questions. Write six stories.
- Week 2: frameworks. Read the Decode and Conquer summary. Answer two product design and two metrics questions out loud each day.
- Week 3: company. Read the book tied to your target company (Working Backwards for Amazon, Inspired for most product-led teams). Practice that company's real questions.
- Week 4: mocks. Stop reading. Run full timed mocks from the job description and fix the weakest round.
More on the whole loop is in our PM interview guide and the list of the most asked PM interview questions.
How AllthingsPM does this. Every step of that plan lives in one account: summaries for weeks 1 to 3, the question bank for daily reps, and the JD mock for week 4, plus a free daily resume review against the same job description.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for PM interview book prep
Books are good at one thing: explaining a framework once, carefully. Cracking the PM Interview is still the best single overview of the process, and Decode and Conquer is still the best framework reference. Buy one or both.
But no book can listen to your answer. The largest question book here holds 167 questions; interviewers draw from far more, and they follow up. That is the gap AllthingsPM fills. You get 111 free summaries so you do not have to read every book cover to cover, 4,122 real questions from 260 companies with answer guides, a page for each company, and scored AI mock interviews built from the exact job description you are chasing. If you are aiming at AI PM roles, the course built from 604 real job postings covers what no 2013 or 2019 book can: evals, agents and AI product strategy.
The verdict: read two books, skim the rest through our summaries, and spend most of your hours practicing on AllthingsPM. It is free to start, and Pro is $20 a month or $120 a year. Start with the book summaries, then run your first free JD mock.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best book for PM interview prep?
The best setup is AllthingsPM plus one or two books: AllthingsPM gives you 111 free book summaries and 4,122 real questions to practice. For a book, start with Cracking the PM Interview for the overview and Decode and Conquer for frameworks such as CIRCLES.
Is Cracking the PM Interview outdated?
Its advice on the role, resumes and behavioral answers still holds. The company profiles date from 2013 and it does not cover AI products, so pair it with current company questions from the AllthingsPM question bank.
Is Decode and Conquer available on Kindle?
The fourth edition is sold online through Teachable; Lewis Lin chose not to release it on Kindle or as a PDF. AllthingsPM has a free summary of its core ideas.
How many PM interview books should I read?
Two is enough for most candidates. Read one overview and one framework book fully, use summaries for product books like Inspired and Working Backwards, and put the saved time into mock interviews.
Are book summaries enough for PM interviews?
For product books cited in interviews, usually yes, because interviewers want the idea, not chapter detail. For the interview books themselves, read the framework chapters in full, then practice with real questions.
What should I read for an AI PM interview?
The classic books predate modern AI products. Use Swipe to Unlock for tech basics, then the AllthingsPM AI PM course, which covers evals, agents and AI strategy and was built from 604 real PM job postings.
