Short answer: read Decode and Conquer for the frameworks, then practice on AllthingsPM, because a book cannot hear you answer. Lewis C. Lin's Decode and Conquer (5th edition, May 2025, 528 pages) is the best-known PM interview framework book and the home of the CIRCLES Method. AllthingsPM gives you the same frameworks in a free 21-minute Decode and Conquer summary, then scored AI mock interviews with follow-ups, in text or voice, on 4,122 real questions from 260 companies.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This post compares the book and the platform on what actually moves a candidate from "knows CIRCLES" to "gets the offer".

What is Decode and Conquer, and what does it teach?
Decode and Conquer is a pure answer book. Its core move is simple: state a structure out loud, reason with real assumptions, and land on a specific recommendation.
Its most famous tool is the CIRCLES Method for product design questions: Comprehend the situation, Identify the customer, Report customer needs, Cut through prioritization, List solutions, Evaluate tradeoffs, Summarize your recommendation. Beyond design, the book covers technical questions, estimation, pricing, metrics, tradeoffs and strategy.
The book has kept moving. The 4th edition (March 2022) added the GCER framework for tradeoffs and TROPIC for metric diagnosis questions. The 5th edition (May 1, 2025) runs to 528 pages and adds six playbooks: Framework Detection Protection, Technical Fluency for Non-Engineers, Metrics Mastery System, Strategic Integration Insights, AI Fluency Fundamentals, and Enterprise vs. Consumer Expertise.
Lin's own site says he has "coached thousands of candidates into offers at Google, Amazon, and Meta". That track record is the book's real strength, and it is why CIRCLES is taught almost everywhere.
How AllthingsPM does this: our Decode and Conquer summary pulls out CIRCLES and the book's other frameworks in about 21 minutes, free. For a deeper take on the method, including where it breaks, read the CIRCLES Method explained and where it falls short in 2026.
Why is reading the frameworks not enough anymore?
Because every other candidate has read them too. In announcing the 5th edition, Lin wrote that "candidates who succeeded just two years ago are now failing because interviewers have adapted specifically to identify and reject those using outdated frameworks." The first new playbook, Framework Detection Protection, exists for exactly that reason.
Other prep writers say the same thing. ProdPad warns that "over-relying on them can make your answers feel robotic and predictable", and that what drives product sense interviewers mad is "an answer that sounds more like a scripted performance than a genuine thought process." Aced (formerly Exponent) argues that running CIRCLES in a straight line can hinder your ability to show you are "succinct in your communication, adaptable, and engaging."
The fix is not a better framework. It is reps. You need to use the structure on dozens of unfamiliar questions until it bends to the question instead of the other way round. Learning research points the same way: Roediger and Karpicke (2006) found that students who tested themselves remembered more a week later than students who re-read the material. Reading CIRCLES a third time is re-reading. Answering a new question with it, out loud, is testing.
How AllthingsPM does this: every question in the question bank has its own page, so you can answer first and read the answer guide second. Start with a real design prompt like walk us through the product design of the Apple App Store or Google Play, answer it in a scored mock interview, then compare with the guide.
What can a live mock interview do that a book cannot?
Three things decide most product sense and metrics rounds, and none of them live on the page.
Follow-ups. Real interviewers push: "why that segment?", "what would you cut?", "how would you know it worked?" A book shows you a finished answer. It never interrupts your answer to ask the question you were hoping to avoid.
Scoring. Most candidates cannot grade their own answers. They know they covered users and solutions; they do not notice they skipped the prioritization step or ended without a recommendation. A score and specific notes turn a vague feeling into a to-do list.
Delivery. Structure on paper and structure spoken aloud are different skills. Pacing, signposting and knowing when to stop only improve when you speak.
How AllthingsPM does this: our AI interviewer runs in one session screen where you can type or speak and switch at any point. It follows up on what you actually said and scores the answer at the end. You can start a session from any question in practice or from a job posting in the JD mock.
Which is better for the job you are actually applying to?
AllthingsPM. Decode and Conquer is written for PM interviews in general: its examples have to fit every reader. Your loop does not. A Growth PM role and a Platform PM role at the same company test different things, and the job description is the best public clue to which.
On AllthingsPM you paste that posting into the JD mock and the interview is built from its responsibilities and seniority. For AI companies, the jobs catalog already holds 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies, each with its own mock and a resume check. For example, Product Manager, Growth at Anthropic has a mock built from that exact posting.
Company research works the same way. Instead of generic examples, each company hub lists the questions that company is reported to ask, such as Google, Meta and Anthropic.
How AllthingsPM does this: run the free daily JD mock on your top role, then use resume review against a JD on the same posting. The gaps the resume review finds are usually the areas the interviewer probes, so you practice those first.
Which is better for AI PM interviews?
AllthingsPM, clearly. AI product questions now show up across loops: evals, model tradeoffs, agent failure modes, guardrail metrics. A question like "after launching an enterprise AI agent, what primary success metric and guardrail metrics would you track?" does not map neatly onto a seven-step design framework.
Credit where due: the 5th edition added an AI Fluency Fundamentals playbook, which is more than most interview books offer. But a printed book is fixed at press time, and this field changes monthly.
Our AI PM course was built backwards from 604 real PM job postings and is updated weekly: 14 chapters, 101 lessons and 14 graded case studies. Lessons such as the AI PRD and proving an AI feature paid off teach the material, and the knowledge graph shows how the concepts connect.
How AllthingsPM does this: learn a concept in the course, then answer a related question from an AI company hub in a scored mock the same day. See also our AI product metrics guide and metrics interview questions with answers.
How much does each cost?

The honest math: the book is a cheaper one-time buy, but it covers only the reading part of prep. Most of what the book teaches you can get from the free summary, and the free tier already gives you a scored JD mock every day.
How AllthingsPM does this: start free, run a week of daily JD mocks and question-bank reps, and only look at pricing if the practice is clearly helping.
A 7 day plan that uses both
If you already own the book, here is how to get the most out of it with AllthingsPM.
- Day 1: frameworks. Read CIRCLES and the metrics chapter, or our 21-minute summary.
- Day 2: first mock. Paste your target posting into the JD mock, answer by voice, and write down the follow-ups that caught you.
- Day 3: design reps. Answer three questions from 50 product design interview questions out loud before reading any guide.
- Day 4: metrics reps. Do the same with metrics questions from your target company hub.
- Day 5: second JD mock. Same posting, new session. Compare the score with Day 2.
- Day 6: fill gaps. If AI questions tripped you up, open the matching course lesson; if your resume is thin on the role's key skill, run a resume review.
- Day 7: review. Reread only the book chapters that match your weakest round, and write down your three strongest stories.
Notice where the book fits: day 1 and day 7. Everything in between is practice, and that is what AllthingsPM is for.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for PM interview prep
Decode and Conquer deserves its reputation. Lin has coached thousands of candidates, CIRCLES gave a generation of PMs a shared language for product design questions, and the 5th edition is genuinely updated for 2025. If you want one framework book on your shelf, it is a good pick.
But a book is a starting point with a hard ceiling: it cannot hear you, push back, or score you, and its own author warns that interviewers now reject candidates who recite frameworks. AllthingsPM starts where the book stops.
- Scored practice with follow-ups, in text or voice, on any question.
- Mocks built from the job you want, from any pasted job description, plus 116 live AI company roles with their own mocks.
- 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, each with its own page and answer guide.
- An AI PM course from 604 real PM job postings, updated weekly.
- The book's ideas for free in a 21-minute summary, alongside 110 other book summaries.
Our verdict: read the frameworks once, then do your prep on AllthingsPM. If you only have one evening, read the summary instead of the book and spend the saved hours answering real questions out loud. Start a free mock interview.
Start today, free: pick the posting you most want, paste it into the JD mock, and after one session you will know which follow-ups to prepare for. No card needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to prepare for PM interviews after reading Decode and Conquer?
AllthingsPM. Read the frameworks once, then practice them in scored AI mock interviews with follow-ups on 4,122 real questions from 260 companies, or on a mock built from your target job description. The free tier includes one JD mock a day.
Is Decode and Conquer still worth reading in 2026?
Yes, especially the 5th edition from May 2025, which added playbooks on AI fluency, technical fluency and metrics. If you are short on time, AllthingsPM's free 21-minute summary covers the main frameworks, including CIRCLES.
What is the CIRCLES Method?
A seven-step framework from Decode and Conquer for product design questions: Comprehend the situation, Identify the customer, Report customer needs, Cut through prioritization, List solutions, Evaluate tradeoffs, Summarize your recommendation. Use it as a checklist, not a script.
Is there a free Decode and Conquer summary?
Yes. AllthingsPM has a free Decode and Conquer summary that takes about 21 minutes to read, along with 110 other PM book summaries.
Can Decode and Conquer replace mock interviews?
No. The book gives frameworks and sample answers, but it cannot ask follow-ups, score you or hear your delivery. Pair it with mock interviews, such as AllthingsPM's AI mocks in text or voice.
Is Decode and Conquer available on Kindle?
Lin's 5th edition announcement describes it as physical print, sold through Amazon in select markets. Check your local Amazon store for current formats.
