Cognition Product Manager Interview (2026): Process, Questions, and Prep

Cognition, the maker of Devin, publishes no PM interview loop; public reports describe a screen, a practical technical round, an in-person final and sometimes an exercise inside Devin. Prepare on AllthingsPM with 10 Cognition PM questions, answer guides and scored mocks.

At Cognition, the product question is always the same: what should the agent do, and what should the human keep?

A Cognition product manager interview is small, fast and technical. Cognition, the company behind the autonomous coding agent Devin, does not publish a PM loop, and its public job board had no role titled Product Manager when we checked on 29 September 2026. Public reports on how it hires describe a short screen, a practical technical round, an in-person final of three to five sessions, and for some roles an exercise done inside Devin. The fastest way to prepare is AllthingsPM, which holds 10 Cognition PM questions, each with its own page, an answer guide and a scored mock interview.

AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. Below, we label what Cognition publishes, what third parties report, and what comes from our own question bank.

What is the Cognition PM interview process?

Cognition's careers page describes the team, not the interview. Every stage below comes from third-party guides, and those guides describe engineering hiring. Read the table as the most likely outline for a product role, then confirm the rounds with your recruiter.

StageWhat is reportedSourceWhat it likely tests for a PM
First callAbout 30 minutes with a recruiter or manager on "background, motivation, culture fit"Design Gurus; techinterview.orgA real "why Cognition" story and whether you want the pace
Technical screenAbout 1 hour, described as "closer to pair programming than to a quiz"techinterview.org; Design GurusWhether you can reason about agents with engineers as a peer
Final round3 to 5 sessions, in person in San Francisco, on "coding depth, system design, how you work"Design Gurus; techinterview.orgJudgment, depth on agent systems, communication
Product exercise (some roles)A "take home inside Devin" that checks "product fluency, workflow judgment"Design GurusHow you would actually delegate work to an agent

Two cautions from the same sources. Design Gurus notes that "Cognition has grown quickly and absorbed the Windsurf team, so its process can change," and advises that if your role is customer facing, you should "ask whether the Devin exercise applies to you." The techinterview.org guide says the systems round centers on agent execution environments, such as how to isolate untrusted code the agent generates.

How AllthingsPM does this. Because the public round list is thin and written for engineers, our JD mock interview builds the interview from the Cognition posting you paste in, asks follow-ups and scores you, typed or spoken. The free tier includes one JD mock a day, a good dry run before a technical conversation with a Cognition engineer.

Does Cognition hire product managers?

Rarely, and that shapes everything. On 29 September 2026, Cognition's public board on Ashby listed 104 roles. The only titles containing "Product" were Product Engineer and Product Marketer, both in San Francisco. There was no role titled Product Manager.

The Product Engineer posting explains why. It says the role "exists for engineers who build with taste," who "make product decisions" and ship "without waiting for a PM or designer to define the problem for you." One of its listed goals is to "Set the Standard for Agent UX," described as "new territory with no established playbook."

Product leadership does exist. The careers page quotes Theodor Marcu, Head of Product Growth: "What I love about Cognition is the urgency. We're racing to build the future of software engineering." So a product role at Cognition is most likely senior, growth or surface specific, and short lived on the board.

What this means for you:

  • You compete with engineers who already do product work. Show what you add: customer research at enterprise scale, pricing, packaging, launch sequencing.
  • You need to build. Bring an agent workflow, a script or a prototype you made yourself.
  • Your "why" must come from using Devin. A story about delegating a real task beats a story about AI in general.

How AllthingsPM does this. The course chapter PM as builder teaches this directly; its lesson on how to read the code you did not write walks you through inspecting an agent loop, its calls and its config. When no Cognition PM role is open, Resume Job Match and the jobs catalog find live AI PM roles that want the same builder profile.

What is it like to work at Cognition?

Know the company before the first call, because interviewers will test whether you understand its bets.

  • Founded in 2023 by Scott Wu (CEO), Steven Hao (CTO) and Walden Yan (CPO), according to Wikipedia. The careers page says the founding team has "10 IOI gold medals."
  • Devin was unveiled in March 2024 as an AI software engineer.
  • Windsurf. On 14 July 2025, Cognition signed a definitive agreement to acquire Windsurf, the agentic IDE, days after Google hired Windsurf's CEO and research leaders, as TechCrunch reported.
  • Devin Desktop. On 2 June 2026, Windsurf became Devin Desktop, with an Agent Command Center that manages "every local and cloud agent from a single Kanban view," and Devin Local replacing Cascade as the default local agent.
  • Valuation. CNBC reported a $10.2 billion valuation in September 2025; Wikipedia lists $26 billion in May 2026.

The culture is explicit. In August 2025, TechCrunch reported that CEO Scott Wu told Windsurf staff: "We don't believe in work-life balance." Staying employees were expected to spend six days in the office and clock more than 80 hour weeks, with a buyout of nine months of salary offered to those who preferred to leave. Treat that as a fact about the job, and expect a direct question about it.

How AllthingsPM does this. Our podcast episodes about AI agents every PM should hear and podcast summaries help you speak about the coding agent market with specifics. Then tailor your resume with a resume review against the JD, so the bullets show what you shipped.

What questions does Cognition ask product managers?

We hold 10 Cognition PM questions in our Cognition question hub: 4 product strategy, 3 design, trust and safety, 1 metrics, 1 estimation and 1 behavioral. Each has its own page with an answer guide, and any of them can start a scored mock. They are practice prompts about Cognition's products, not leaked transcripts.

Design, trust and safety:

Behavioral:

Our Windsurf question hub covers the IDE side of the same company, including how you would integrate Devin's autonomous capabilities into the Windsurf IDE. Since Windsurf is now Devin Desktop, those questions are fair game too.

How AllthingsPM does this. The Cognition hub keeps all 10 questions on one page by type, so you can finish the set in a week. For more reps on the same themes, the full question bank and the mock interview screen let you switch between typing and speaking in one session.

How should you answer Cognition strategy questions?

Four of the ten questions are strategy, and they share one tension: an autonomous agent and an IDE serve the same developer at different levels of control. A frame that works:

  1. Name the two jobs. The IDE is for work the developer drives. The autonomous agent is for work the developer delegates. Say who each serves and when.
  2. Use the company's own move. Cognition merged the brands into Devin Desktop, with one command center for local and cloud agents. Argue for or against that choice, with reasons.
  3. Route by risk and clarity. For "which tasks go to Devin," well specified, testable, reversible tasks go to the agent; ambiguous or high blast radius tasks stay with a human.
  4. Price by the unit of value. Per seat fits the IDE; per task or outcome fits delegation. Say how each pricing model changes buyer risk and your margin.

How AllthingsPM does this. The course chapter on agents and agentic architecture covers workflows versus agents and the agent spec you own, the vocabulary these answers need. Our guide to AI pricing models prepares the pricing question.

How should you answer Cognition trust and safety questions?

"Let Devin merge to production" and "guardrails against security vulnerabilities" are the questions that separate AI PMs from generalists. A strong answer moves in steps:

  1. Start from reversibility. An agent may act alone where mistakes are cheap to undo. Merging to production is not, so it earns autonomy gradually.
  2. Design the ladder. Suggest, then open pull requests for review, then merge on low risk repos with tests passing, then broader scope as the track record grows.
  3. Put the controls in the product. Scoped credentials, sandboxed execution, required checks, security scanning on every diff and a readable plan before the agent acts.
  4. Measure reliability, not demos. Track the share of agent pull requests merged without rework, reverts and incidents per hundred merges.

For the hand-off UX question, focus on the moment the agent gets stuck: what it reports, what it asks, and how a human picks up with full context.

How AllthingsPM does this. The trust chapter teaches what an agent may do without asking and agent security, and evaluating an agent, not an answer gives you the reliability language.

How should you answer Cognition metrics and estimation questions?

These two share one idea: an enterprise buys Devin to get engineering work done for less, so value and cost must be read together.

  • ROI metrics. For "prove Devin delivers ROI," define the unit first (a merged task), then track tasks completed, engineer hours saved against a baseline, cycle time, and a quality guardrail such as rework or reverts.
  • Estimation. For "cost savings of routing 10% of tasks," build from team size, share of routable tasks, hours per task, agent success rate, human review time and agent cost. State assumptions aloud; the structure is what gets scored.
  • Enterprise rollout. Begin with one team and one task type, prove the number, then expand.

How AllthingsPM does this. Our course lesson on moving from pilot to production covers staged enterprise rollout, and our AI evals for product managers guide sharpens the quality guardrail.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Cognition interview prep

Most Cognition interview pages online are written for software engineers: live coding, systems design and agent building. None that we found has a PM question set, and none of them interviews you. AllthingsPM brings three things together for this loop.

First, the questions. All 10 Cognition PM questions, from Devin versus Windsurf to letting an agent merge to production, have their own page, an answer guide and a scored mock, inside a bank of 4,122 questions from 260 companies.

Second, practice on the real job. Paste the Cognition posting you applied to and the JD mock builds the interview from it, typed or spoken, with follow-ups and a score. When Cognition opens a rare product role, a generic mock cannot rehearse it; a mock built from that JD can.

Third, the skills. The AI PM course, built from 604 real PM job postings, teaches agent architecture, autonomy levels, agent evals and security, the exact ground a Cognition engineer will probe.

Design Gurus and techinterview.org collect useful process notes for engineers, and this guide cites them. For daily, Cognition specific PM practice plus the course and question bank in one account, use AllthingsPM. It starts free, and Pro is $20 a month or $120 a year.
