The Atlassian product manager interview usually has a recruiter call, a PM phone screen, a take-home assignment of about three hours, and a final panel of three pillar interviews plus a separate values interview. Atlassian's own PM interview handbook names the pillars: lead and inspire, craft mastery, and deliver outcomes, with communication judged in every round. The fastest way to prepare is to answer real Atlassian prompts out loud and get pushed on them. AllthingsPM gives you 13 Atlassian-tagged questions, each with its own answer guide and a one-click scored AI mock, plus a free tier.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This guide is not affiliated with Atlassian, and it says which fact comes from which source.
What is the Atlassian PM interview process?
Atlassian is unusually open about how it hires PMs. Its careers site publishes a product manager interview handbook, so the final panel structure below comes from Atlassian itself. The earlier stages come from prep guides by Prepfully, Aced (formerly Exponent), Leland and Interview Query, and they differ on details.
| Stage | Length | What it tests | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recruiter call | About 20 min (Aced); 45 min (Prepfully) | Background, fit, "Why Atlassian?" | Aced, Prepfully |
| PM phone screen | 45 min to 1 hour, 1 to 2 rounds (Aced) | Prioritization, customer focus, data, agile habits | Aced, Prepfully |
| Take-home assignment | Up to 3 hours of work (Aced, Prepfully) | Product design or strategy, analytics; slides or a written doc | Aced, Prepfully |
| Lead and inspire interview | About 1 hour (Aced) | Vision, influence without authority, comfort with ambiguity | Atlassian handbook |
| Craft mastery interview | About 1 hour | Customer focus, product judgment, breadth of skills | Atlassian handbook |
| Deliver outcomes interview | About 1 hour | Impact, prioritization, saying no | Atlassian handbook |
| Values interview | About 1 hour | Fit with Atlassian's five values; often run by another team | Atlassian handbook |
Timelines vary. Interview Query's summary says most candidates finish in two to five weeks, depending on region and role.
Scoring is strict. Aced reports that interviewers score from 1 ("no hire") to 4 ("strong hire"), that any score of 1 leads to rejection, and that offers usually go to candidates averaging 3 or higher. Treat this as reported, not official, but it means one weak round can end a loop.
How AllthingsPM does this. Each panel round tests a different pillar, so drill them one at a time. The Atlassian question hub holds all 13 Atlassian questions, and any of them starts a scored mock in one click, typed or by voice. The AI interviewer asks follow-ups the way a panel interviewer does, so the first hard follow-up does not happen in the real room.
What does Atlassian look for in a PM?
The handbook sums it up in one line: "We want product managers who lead and inspire, who seek product mastery, who are great communicators, and who deliver outcomes." Each pillar maps to a round.
Lead and inspire. The handbook describes this as "unity of effort": "on a team with a designer, a marketing person, and seven engineers, it's your job to get them all behind the same goal, moving in the same direction." Interviewers look for vision setting, influence without authority, and comfort with change.
Craft mastery. Customer first thinking and a "T-shaped" profile: deep in one area, broad across the business, design and analytical sides of the job.
Deliver outcomes. "The outcomes are what's most important." The handbook asks whether what you shipped drove value, not how much you shipped. Expect questions on prioritization and the things you chose not to build.
Great communicator. Not a separate round. It is judged everywhere, including how well you balance context against the clock.
The handbook adds two practical tips: talk about wins with "we" rather than "I", and pick examples with real customer or business value you can measure. It also says an engineering degree is not required; marketing, math, statistics and liberal arts backgrounds are all welcome.
How AllthingsPM does this. Every mock is scored, and the feedback points at the same things the pillars do: whether you picked a clear user, made a tradeoff, and tied the answer to an outcome. Run three mocks, one per pillar, and compare scores to find your weak round before Atlassian does.
What questions does Atlassian ask PM candidates?
Our Atlassian question hub holds 13 questions tagged to Atlassian. They are practice questions reported from Atlassian interviews and prep sources, not a leaked list. Each one has its own page, an answer guide and a button to start a mock.
The set is small, so we have not padded it. It leans to design and strategy, and the strategy prompts are about Atlassian itself.
Strategy and roadmap
- If you were the CPO of Atlassian, what would be your strategy for company growth?
- It is your responsibility as the Product Manager at Atlassian to develop a plan for expanding into new markets. Investigate your opportunities.
- What would be your roadmap if you were the PM of JIRA?
- If you were the PM of Jira for mobile, what will be your roadmap?
- Should Google build a food delivery app?
Product design and ideas
- What is that one product feature that would change the landscape of Devops/GitOps?
- How would you design a metaverse solution for office management and collaboration?
- Imagine an ideal kitchen. How would you design it?
- How would you create a communication system from Earth to Mars?
- Design a mobile application to assist hobby gardeners.
- You are a new PM at Facebook. Design an app to help people save money.
- Tell me about a product that can be sold at vending machines beyond classic snacks and drinks.
Behavioral
Prepfully's list overlaps with ours: it includes the Jira mobile roadmap question and "Have you ever used data to influence an important stakeholder?" It adds "Out of all your suggestions for improving Trello, which would you prioritize first, and why?" Aced lists "Which market do you think we should enter next?" and asks for a goal and north star metric for a product such as Trello. Leland's list includes "What is your favorite Atlassian product, and why?"
How AllthingsPM does this. Every question above links to a page with an answer guide and a mock button. Open the Jira roadmap question, read the guide, close it, then answer out loud. The AI interviewer asks which users you prioritized, what you cut and how you would measure it, then scores you.
How do you answer Atlassian strategy and roadmap questions?
Four of our five strategy prompts are about Atlassian's own business. That is a signal: know the product line before you walk in. Use Jira, Confluence and Trello for a week if you can, and read how Atlassian describes its AI, Rovo, which its site calls "AI that knows your business."
A structure that fits "What would be your roadmap if you were the PM of Jira?":
- Clarify the goal. Growth in new teams, retention, expansion inside large customers, or revenue? Ask which one.
- Pick a segment. Software teams, non-technical business teams, or enterprise admins have very different needs.
- Name the problems with evidence you would look for, then rank them.
- Build a now, next, later roadmap with three to five bets, each tied to the problem it solves.
- Say what you will not do. "Deliver outcomes" rewards a clear no.
- Close with metrics: one success metric, one input metric, one guardrail.
For the CPO growth and new markets prompts, start with the market (who buys, who competes, what is changing), name Atlassian's edge, pick one direction and commit. For Jira mobile, focus on what people actually do on a phone: triage, approve, comment, get notified. Do not rebuild the desktop app.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our product strategy interview questions guide walks through the market, edge and bet structure. For AI roadmap ideas, the course lesson on a roadmap around an evaluable slice shows how to plan AI features you can actually measure. Then run the CPO question as a mock and let the interviewer challenge your direction.
How do you handle Atlassian design questions?
Seven of our Atlassian questions are design or idea prompts. Two sit close to Atlassian's world (DevOps and GitOps, office collaboration). The rest are open prompts like a kitchen, a gardening app or an Earth to Mars communication system.
The open prompts test structure under ambiguity, which is the lead and inspire pillar in disguise. Use the same shape each time:
- Clarify who the product is for and what success means.
- Pick one user and describe their day.
- List pains, rank them, and choose one.
- Generate three solutions, pick one, and explain the tradeoff.
- Define a metric and a first version you could ship.
For the DevOps prompt, show you understand the user. A developer who gets paged at night cares about fast context, not another dashboard. Tie your feature to a concrete step in their workflow.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our product design interview questions and framework guide and the product sense interview guide cover the full answer shape. Run the gardening app as a mock; the interviewer will push on why you picked that user, which is where most answers wobble.
How do you prepare for the Atlassian take-home?
Aced describes the take-home as a product design or strategy exercise of up to three hours, submitted as a presentation or written document, and says it checks analytical and strategy skills. Prepfully describes the same three hour scope across analytics, strategy and design. Leland's APM guide describes an execution focused exercise with about 48 hours to complete it.
What works:
- Restate the problem and your assumptions on the first page.
- Show your data reasoning, even with made-up numbers clearly labeled as assumptions.
- Make one recommendation and defend it; list the alternatives you rejected.
- End with metrics and risks.
- Rehearse the walkthrough. A panel will likely ask about it, so prepare for "why not option B?" and "how would you know it worked?"
Respect the time box. Handing in a 40 page deck for a three hour task says you cannot prioritize, which is the opposite of what deliver outcomes rewards.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our take-home case study presentation guide covers structure and Q&A. After you draft yours, run a mock on the new markets question and let the AI interviewer ask the follow-ups a panel would.
How do you prepare for the Atlassian values interview?
The handbook says the values interview is separate, focuses on the values themselves, and is often run by someone from a different Atlassian team. Aced lists the five values:
- Open company, no bullshit
- Build with heart and balance
- Don't #@!% the customer
- Play, as a team
- Be the change you seek
Map one story to each value. A time you shared bad news early fits "open company." A time you pushed back to protect users fits "don't #@!% the customer." A time you fixed something nobody owned fits "be the change you seek." Add a failure story; Aced and Prepfully both list failure questions.
Use STAR, keep each story under two minutes, and end with a result and a lesson. Say "we" for the team's work and "I" only for what you personally decided.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our behavioral PM interview questions guide has STAR examples. Run the data persuasion question as a voice mock; the interviewer asks what you would do differently. The resume review against a JD also shows which of your stories match the Atlassian posting.
What does a 3 week Atlassian prep plan look like?
| Week | Focus | What to do on AllthingsPM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pillars, values, stories | Read Atlassian's PM handbook; write five STAR stories mapped to the five values plus one failure story; run the behavioral question as a voice mock |
| 2 | Strategy and design | Mock all four Atlassian strategy prompts and three design prompts; review scores and redo the weakest |
| 3 | Take-home, the real JD | Do a timed three hour practice take-home; paste the Atlassian job description into the JD mock; run a resume review against it |
If you have less time, keep week 1 and the JD mock from week 3. Our 30 day PM interview study plan has a longer version.
Are there live Atlassian PM jobs on AllthingsPM?
Our jobs catalog holds 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies, and Atlassian is not one of them today. Atlassian posts openings on its own careers site. To practice for one, copy the posting text into the JD mock interview; it builds questions from that exact description. Resume Job Match finds other PM roles that fit your resume.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Atlassian PM interview prep
Atlassian's handbook tells you what the panel wants, and the prep guides cited here describe the stages. Human coaching marketplaces add a person who may have interviewed there, at a much higher price per session.
AllthingsPM turns that knowledge into practice. You get 13 Atlassian-tagged questions, each with its own page and answer guide, and a scored AI interviewer that follows up on every one, typed or by voice. You can paste the actual Atlassian job description and get a mock built from it. The question bank adds 4,122 questions from 260 companies for extra strategy and design reps, and the AI PM course covers the skills AI product roles need. It all sits in one place, with a free tier and Pro at $20/month or $120/year.
Read the handbook to learn the pillars. Use AllthingsPM to practice until your answers hold up under follow-ups. Start with the Atlassian question hub.
