What is a product management case study interview?

A case study interview hands you an open product situation and asks what you would do. Product School describes it as a tool companies use "to assess a candidate's analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills" [9]. The Product Folks split cases into three kinds: product design, product strategy, and quantitative analysis [10].

Cases come in two formats. Leland separates "live interviews, where you think out loud and adapt in real time" from "take-home assignments, where you deliver a slide deck or a written report" [11]. Live cases reward a fast, clear structure. Take-homes reward depth: a problem statement, a metric plan, a recommendation you can defend.

Typical prompts look like this, all real questions from our bank:

How AllthingsPM does this. Every one of those prompts has its own page in the question bank with what the question tests and a step by step approach, plus a button to practice it as a scored mock. You can filter by company, so the cases you rehearse are the ones that company actually asks.

The platforms, ranked

1. AllthingsPM: best overall for case study practice

AllthingsPM covers all three pieces of case prep in one account.

  • Real prompts. 4,122 questions from 260 companies, with company pages such as Google and Anthropic. Each has an answer guide.
  • Live practice. Any question starts a scored mock. The JD mock goes further: paste the job description and the AI interviewer builds the case around that company, role and level, then asks follow-ups on your answer.
  • Long cases. The AI PM course has 14 graded integration cases. In Discovery and strategy for AI products, for example, you write a problem statement, an opportunity qualification and a strategy memo for one product you carry through the course, which is close to a take-home case.

It has no human coaches or peer matching. For that, pair it with StellarPeers or Aced's free plan.

2. Aced (formerly Exponent)

Aced has a large PM community, courses and peer mocks. Its free plan includes 5 peer mocks a month; Pro is $12 a month billed yearly ($79 month to month), and the tier with AI mocks is $20 a month billed yearly ($99 month to month) [2]. It does not build a case from your job description. Compare the two in AllthingsPM vs Exponent.

3. Product Management Exercises

Known for its community question bank: 3,185 questions across 230 companies when we checked, with many user-written answers. Interview Prep is $149 a year, and Lite is $139 one time [3]. We found no AI mock interviewer. See AllthingsPM vs PM Exercises.

4. RocketBlocks

RocketBlocks sells structured drills on product sense, root-cause analysis and market estimation, plus "19 mock interviews and answers from PMs at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon & more," for $35 a month or $155 a year with a 7-day trial; coaching is $200 an hour [4]. It suits MBA students who also prep for consulting.

5. StellarPeers

The free plan includes unlimited peer mock interviews, 37 solved questions and 1,200+ community questions; paid plans run $79 a month, $150 for three months, or $180 a year, and there are no refunds [5]. An expert mock is $250 for 45 minutes [6]. It is the best free source of live human case practice.

How AllthingsPM does this. Peers are only as good as the prompt you bring. Pick a case from the question bank, read its answer guide, and run it once as a scored AI mock before your peer session. You spend the live hour on pushback, not on learning the format.

6. Prepfully

A coach marketplace where you can book someone from your target company. Sessions run $69 to $399, median $149 [7]. Buy one when you have a real loop.

7. IGotAnOffer

Vetted coaches paid in credits of about $50, 2 to 5 credits an hour, so roughly $100 to $250, with a refund if a session disappoints and you report it within 24 hours [8].

8. PMMockr

A PM-only AI mock tool with timed voice or text rounds and scored reports, plus a free question set [12]. It has no course, no JD mocks and no live job catalog.

How AllthingsPM does this. Most tools in this list do one job: questions, peers, drills or coaches. AllthingsPM puts the questions, the AI interviewer, the JD mock and the graded long cases behind one login, which is why it ranks first on practice per dollar.

How should you practice PM case studies?

Reading sample answers feels productive but does not build the skill. Leland is blunt: "You won't get good at these by just reading; you need reps" [11]. Product School's advice is to practice case questions ahead of time using the job postings you are targeting [9].

A simple loop that works on any platform:

  1. Pick one real prompt from the company you are interviewing with.
  2. Set a timer. Give yourself two minutes of silence to structure, then talk.
  3. Answer out loud. Clarify the goal and user, list options, prioritise one, and close with metrics and trade-offs.
  4. Get feedback on structure, not just content: where did you lose the thread?
  5. Rewrite one thing, then run the same prompt again two days later.

How AllthingsPM does this. Steps 1 to 4 happen on one screen: open a question, hit start, answer in text or voice, and get a score with follow-ups. The JD mock replaces step 1 entirely by generating the case from the posting you paste.

Which platform fits your situation?

No budget. AllthingsPM's free tier for daily AI case reps and answer guides, plus StellarPeers' free plan for live human cases.

Big tech loop in two weeks. Drill that company's page, such as Meta or Amazon, run a JD mock every day, then book one Prepfully or IGotAnOffer session with a coach from that company. Our product sense interview guide covers the structure.

AI PM roles. AI cases ask about evals, model limits and cost. Practice against live postings in the jobs catalog, such as this Anthropic growth PM role, and read AI PM interview questions.

Take-home case coming up. Work through a graded integration case in the course, for example the metric tree and impact readout in Prove it paid off. That is the format a written case asks for.

How AllthingsPM does this. Whatever your path, you start in the same free account, and your resume can be checked against the same posting with resume review against a JD, so the stories you use in cases match what the recruiter already read.

A two-week case study plan

Days 1 to 3: find the weak case type. Run one JD mock a day and note whether design, strategy or metrics cases lose you the most points.

Days 4 to 8: volume. Three prompts a day from the question bank on your weakest type, timed, out loud. Compare your structure with each answer guide.

Days 9 to 11: humans. Two peer mocks on StellarPeers or Aced. Ask your partner to push back hard on your prioritisation.

Days 12 to 13: calibrate. If the loop matters, one paid coach session. Bring your two weakest cases.

Day 14: rehearse. One final JD mock and a light review. No new frameworks.

Checklist for every case

  • State the goal and the user before any solution.
  • Say your structure in the first minute.
  • Choose one solution and say why, with the trade-off.
  • Close with a primary metric and a counter metric.

How AllthingsPM does this. Every step except the human mocks runs inside AllthingsPM, and on the free tier the plan costs nothing. Pro removes the one-a-day limit for $20 a month.

Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for case study practice

Case interviews reward reps on realistic prompts with honest feedback. AllthingsPM is built for exactly that.

  • The prompts are real. 4,122 questions from 260 companies, each with an answer guide, not a generic list of framework exercises.
  • The practice is live. Any question becomes a scored AI mock with follow-ups, in text or voice, and the JD mock builds a case from your target posting.
  • The long cases are graded. 14 integration cases in an AI PM course built from 604 real job postings prepare you for take-homes.
  • It costs less. $120 a year is below Aced Pro ($144), PM Exercises ($149), RocketBlocks ($155) and StellarPeers ($180), and you can start free.

The others have genuine strengths: StellarPeers and Aced have live peer communities, RocketBlocks has tidy drills, and Prepfully has insiders at your target company. Use them for a few human sessions. For the daily work of getting good at cases, AllthingsPM gives you more practice for less money in one place. Start with the question bank.

Your next case interview is for one real role. Open AllthingsPM, paste that job description into the free JD mock, and find out today which part of your case answer needs the most work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best platform for product management case study practice?

AllthingsPM, for most candidates. It combines 4,122 real questions with answer guides, scored AI mocks built from any job description and 14 graded case studies in its AI PM course, with a free daily JD mock. Add StellarPeers or Aced for free peer practice.

How many practice cases should I do before a PM interview?

There is no fixed number. Aim for enough timed, out-loud reps that you can state a clear structure within the first minute on any prompt, and re-run your weakest cases until your score improves.

Are PM case interviews live or take-home?

Both. Leland describes live cases where you think out loud and take-home assignments where you deliver a deck or written report. Practice live prompts with mocks and take-homes with longer written cases.

Can I practice PM case studies for free?

Yes. AllthingsPM gives one JD mock and one resume review a day plus free question pages and answer guides, StellarPeers offers unlimited peer mocks, and Aced's free plan includes 5 peer mocks a month.

Is a paid coach worth it for case interviews?

Once or twice, before a real loop. Coaches on Prepfully and IGotAnOffer cost about $100 to $250 an hour, so do your volume with AI mocks and use a coach to calibrate against a specific company's bar.
