The Shopify product manager interview has five stages on Shopify's own careers FAQ. First comes a 15 to 30 minute initial call. Then there is a 60 to 75 minute Craft Assessment, a 30 to 60 minute Life Story conversation with a recruiter, and Meet the Team sessions with 3 to 5 future co-workers for up to an hour each. After that, the hiring team decides. The Life Story is the round most candidates have never seen before. The craft and team rounds test product sense, metrics and strategy for merchants. AllthingsPM gives you 50 Shopify-tagged questions, each with an answer guide and a one-click scored AI mock. It has a free tier, and Pro costs $20 a month.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This guide is not affiliated with Shopify, and it says which facts come from which source.
What is the Shopify PM interview process?
Shopify is one of the few big tech companies that publishes its interview steps. The table below uses the official careers FAQ for stages and lengths. It adds PM-specific detail from Aced (formerly Exponent).
| Stage | Length | What it tests | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apply | Pick 1 to 2 roles in a 30-day window | Fit for the role | Shopify careers FAQ |
| Initial call | 15 to 30 min with a recruiter or hiring manager | Motivation, level, logistics | Shopify careers FAQ |
| Craft Assessment | 60 to 75 min with someone in your field | Core PM competencies and how you solve problems | Shopify careers FAQ |
| The Life Story | 30 to 60 min with a recruiter | Your career path, choices and lessons | Shopify careers FAQ, Shopify Engineering |
| Meet the Team | 3 to 5 co-workers, up to 1 hour each | For PMs: thought leadership, case study, dev and UX sessions | Shopify careers FAQ, Aced |
| Decision | Varies | The hiring team reviews all feedback | Shopify careers FAQ |
Timeline. Shopify's FAQ says "timelines will vary depending on the role and number of applicants." Aced's company guide says the process "usually takes several weeks," though some candidates report one "closer to three to four months." Do not plan around a fixed number of weeks.
The order can change. Aced's PM guide lists the Life Story right after the recruiter call. The official FAQ puts the Craft Assessment first. Prepare for both before your first call.
How AllthingsPM does this. Each Shopify stage tests a different muscle, so drill them one at a time. The Shopify question hub groups all 50 questions by type, and any of them starts a scored mock in one click. You can answer typed or by voice, so your first spoken answer happens before the Craft Assessment, not during it.
What happens in the Shopify Life Story interview?
The Life Story is Shopify's signature round. Shopify Engineering describes it as "a one-hour conversational interview with a recruiter about your past personal and professional experiences." It says to "expect an organic, two-sided conversation rather than your typical interview Q&A." The same post says every candidate has one, and states the principle behind it: "we hire people, not resumes."
Shopify names the five traits it listens for:
- Impact: where you made a real difference.
- Readiness: how you prepared for and handled new challenges.
- Trust: how others came to rely on you.
- Engagement: what you care about and chase on your own.
- Self-awareness: what you learned from misses as well as wins.
VP Engineering Farhan Thawar explains the aim in the same post. It is to learn "what interesting things they've done in their past, and how they've reacted to these situations."
Aced describes the round as one where "an interviewer walks chronologically through your background." That is the key difference from a behavioral interview. You are not answering "tell me about a time" prompts with separate STAR stories. You are telling one connected story, from your early choices to today, and explaining why you made each move.
Prepare it like this:
- Draw your timeline. Mark every job, switch and turning point, including the ones before your career.
- Write the "why" for each move. Interviewers ask why you left, why you chose the next thing and what you would redo.
- Pick three to five anchor stories. Aced suggests stories "a couple of minutes long, that show growth, ownership, and impact."
- Tag each story to a trait. Make sure all five traits appear at least once.
- Keep your misses in. Shopify asks about personal "triumphs and failures." A story with no failure reads as rehearsed.
How AllthingsPM does this. Two questions on the Shopify hub fit the Life Story: Tell us about yourself and your career and What was High School like for you?. Run them as voice mocks and let the AI interviewer ask why you made each move. Then use resume review against the JD to find the gaps your story should explain.
What questions does Shopify ask PM candidates?
Our Shopify question hub holds 50 questions tagged to Shopify. They are practice questions reported from Shopify interviews and prep sources, not a leaked list. Each has its own page, an answer guide and a button to start a mock.
The split is even across four types. That matches Aced's list of what Shopify tests: product strategy, analysis, design thinking and working with a team. It also matches a Meet the Team day with several different sessions.
Shopify-specific product and metrics questions
- You are a PM at Shopify. Design a world-class loyalty program.
- Choosing themes is a challenging part of setting up a store on Shopify. How would you help merchants find the perfect theme?
- Shopify is working on improving its mobile experience. What metrics would you focus on to set goals and track progress?
- Shopify opened its platform to third-party developers. Your team is developing the Shopify App Store.
- Design a Shopify checkout system.
Strategy
- You and your team have a year to make Shopify the best platform for new sellers. What can you do in 6 months?
- A seller escalates on social media after finding a competing payment solutions provider. What do you do?
- How would you determine if the customer care team at a Shopify app is effectively contributing to business growth?
- What do you think the future of e-commerce is? What does it look like in 5 years?
- Shopify has launched NFT marketplaces. As Growth Manager, build the GTM and growth strategy.
Commerce problem solving
- Orders cancellation increased by 15%. How do you diagnose the root cause?
- 70% of shoppers of an eCommerce site are reviewing the return policy page before shopping. What do you do?
- How would you improve order conversions by optimising the product descriptions page for a fashion ecommerce platform?
- What are the important metrics a PM for a luxury goods eCommerce website should look at?
Behavioral and motivation
- Why do you want to join Shopify?
- What makes you want to leave your current job, and why can Shopify keep you interested?
- How do you know when to cut corners to get a product out the door?
- How would you keep developers working on a product motivated and turning out quality work?
How AllthingsPM does this. Every question above links to its own page with an answer guide and a mock button. Open the 15% cancellation question, read the guide, close it, and answer out loud. The AI interviewer asks what you checked first, how you split the data and what you would do next, then scores your answer.
How do you answer Shopify product questions like a merchant?
Look at the Shopify-specific list again: themes, the App Store, checkout, loyalty, new sellers, a payments escalation. Almost every prompt puts you in the shoes of a merchant running a business on the platform, with shoppers one step removed. A consumer-app answer that only talks about "users" misses who Shopify's customer is.
For any Shopify product or metrics question, name the three parties before you pick one:
- Merchants: setup, themes, apps, payments, payouts, time saved, sales made.
- Shoppers: the storefront, checkout, trust, returns, delivery.
- Developers and partners: the apps and themes that extend what merchants can do.
Then choose the party the goal points to, and say what could hurt the other two. That is your guardrail. For the new-seller question, a strong answer segments sellers by stage (first product, first sale, first repeat customer). It picks one drop-off, proposes a fix for it and names a merchant success metric such as time to first sale.
For a metrics drop like the 15% cancellation spike, work in order. Check the data and logging, then timing and seasonality, then split by merchant segment, payment method, region and device. Only then name a cause.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our metrics interview guide walks through drop diagnosis step by step, and the product sense interview guide shows how to pick a segment and defend it. The course chapter on proving impact covers how to measure features that serve more than one user group.
How does AI and prototyping show up in a Shopify PM interview?
Shopify has made its AI stance public. In April 2025, CEO Tobi Lütke shared an internal memo that began: "Reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation at Shopify." Digital Commerce 360 reported that the memo asked teams to show why AI cannot do a job before asking for more headcount. It also said AI use would be part of performance reviews.
For PM candidates, that raises two things.
Expect to talk about how you use AI. It is a fair bet that a craft or team interviewer will ask how AI fits into your own work. Have a specific, recent example: what you built or sped up, what went wrong and what you checked by hand.
Expect prototyping and technical depth. Aced's company guide says Shopify emphasizes "prototyping, with leadership publicly pushing PMs to build prototypes." Aced's PM guide goes further: "As of 2025, Shopify has indicated they plan to introduce coding questions for all product managers." That comes from one prep source, not from Shopify, so treat it as a possibility. Still, if you can show a working prototype of an idea in a case round, it will help your answer.
How AllthingsPM does this. The course's PM as builder chapter teaches exactly this skill, starting with prototyping by what the prototype must prove. Our guides to the PM vibe coding interview and vibe coding for PMs show how to build a quick demo for a case. The knowledge graph maps the AI concepts an interviewer may probe.
A 3 week Shopify PM prep plan
| Week | Focus | Do this on AllthingsPM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Life Story and motivation | Draw your timeline and five trait stories. Run "Tell us about yourself" and "Why Shopify?" as voice mocks. Check gaps with resume review. |
| 2 | Craft: product sense and metrics | One Shopify question a day from the Shopify hub, timed at 35 minutes, always naming merchants, shoppers and developers. |
| 3 | Meet the Team and AI | Two strategy prompts, one prototype built for a case, and a full run from the pasted posting in the JD mock. |
If you want a primer on case structure, Decode and Conquer is widely used, and the Inspired summary covers how strong product teams work with engineering and design, which is the focus of the dev and UX session. To compare loops, read our Stripe PM interview guide and Amazon PM interview guide.
How AllthingsPM does this. Every row of the plan runs inside AllthingsPM: stories in resume review, cases from the Shopify hub, full runs in the JD mock and primers in book summaries. Shopify roles are not in our jobs catalog yet, so paste the Shopify posting straight into the JD mock. Use Resume Job Match to find similar commerce PM roles while you wait.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Shopify PM prep
Shopify looks at two things: how you think through a merchant problem, and how honestly you tell your own story. Both improve only with practice out loud, with someone asking "why?" after every answer. Books give you frameworks but cannot ask follow-ups. Generic AI chat can role-play, but it does not know Shopify's prompts and will not score you. Coach marketplaces offer former Shopify PMs, which helps for a final polish, but you pay per session.
AllthingsPM puts the whole loop in one place. It has 50 Shopify-tagged questions, each with an answer guide and a one-click scored mock. It builds mocks from the exact Shopify job description, typed or spoken. It adds resume review against the JD for your Life Story. It also has an AI PM course, built from 604 real job postings, that teaches the prototyping Shopify's leaders talk about. Of the tools we found, only 4 build mocks from a job description. AllthingsPM is the only one that also has a course, a question bank and live JDs.
| What you need for Shopify | AllthingsPM | Coach marketplaces | Generic AI chat | Books |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real Shopify questions with answer guides | 50, each with its own page | Question lists in guides | No curated bank | Sample cases |
| Scored mock with follow-ups | Yes, text or voice | Yes, with a human | Unscored role-play | No |
| Mock from the exact Shopify posting | Yes | Not their core offer | Only if you prompt it | No |
| Life Story rehearsal | Voice mocks plus resume review against the JD | Yes, with a human | Only if you prompt it | No |
| AI and prototyping skills | 14-chapter AI PM course | Varies by coach | Ad hoc | Some |
| Price | Free tier; $20/month or $120/year | Per session | Varies | One-time purchase |
The verdict: book a coach for one final Life Story run if your budget allows, but do the daily volume on AllthingsPM. The Shopify questions, the scored mocks and the course are all there. Start in the Shopify question hub.

Frequently asked questions
How many rounds are in the Shopify PM interview?
Shopify's careers FAQ lists an initial call, a Craft Assessment, the Life Story, and Meet the Team sessions with 3 to 5 future co-workers for up to an hour each, followed by a decision. For PMs, Aced says the team sessions include thought leadership, case study and dev or UX interviews.
How long does the Shopify hiring process take?
Shopify says timelines vary by role and number of applicants. Aced says it usually takes several weeks, though some candidates report three to four months.
Should I use STAR in the Shopify Life Story interview?
Not as your main format. Shopify describes the Life Story as an organic, two-sided conversation about your path, not a typical Q&A. Tell one chronological story and explain why you made each move. Save tight STAR stories for behavioral questions in other rounds.
Do Shopify product managers get coding questions?
Aced's PM guide says that, as of 2025, Shopify indicated plans to introduce coding questions for all product managers. Shopify's own FAQ does not say so, so ask your recruiter. Either way, being able to show a quick prototype helps, given how publicly Shopify's leaders push AI and prototyping.
What is the best way to prepare for the Shopify PM interview?
AllthingsPM is the best place to start, because it combines 50 Shopify-tagged prompts, answer guides and a scored AI interviewer that follows up. You can also paste the Shopify posting into a JD mock, free for one a day. Add a human coach for a final Life Story run if your budget allows.
