The Rakuten product manager interview usually has a recruiter screen, a case study or analytical assessment, and final rounds with the hiring manager, a team lead and senior leadership, according to the prep guides and candidate reports we read. The loop tests product sense, metrics, data-driven decisions and fit with Rakuten's culture. The real surprise is the content: most Rakuten questions we hold are about ad monetization and streaming. AllthingsPM gives you 22 Rakuten-tagged questions, each with its own answer guide and a one-click scored AI mock, plus a free tier.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This guide is not affiliated with Rakuten, and it says which fact comes from which source.
What is the Rakuten PM interview process?
Rakuten does not publish a PM interview script, and the loop varies a lot by business unit (Rakuten Group in Tokyo, Rakuten Advertising, Rakuten TV, Viki, Rakuten Symphony and others). The stages below come from Interview Query's Rakuten PM guide and candidate reports summarized on Glassdoor.
| Stage | What it tests | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen (phone) | Background, experience, motivation for Rakuten, culture and role details | Interview Query |
| Technical or analytical assessment | A case study (or, for some roles, a coding test) on analytical skills and product metrics | Interview Query |
| Hiring manager and team interviews | Product sense, execution, working with engineering and ad ops | Glassdoor candidate reports |
| Final round with senior leadership | Your vision for the role, market trends, user acquisition, retention and onboarding | Interview Query |
How many interviews? Candidate reports on Glassdoor mention up to three interviews after the screen, typically a hiring manager, a team leader and a senior manager. Interview Query says the final round is "often with senior leadership or executives."
How long does it take? Glassdoor's Rakuten PM page reported an average of about 28 days to get hired, and a difficulty rating of 2.8 out of 5 from candidates. Treat both as rough signals; the sample is small and mixes regions.
Expect English. Rakuten made English its official internal language in a policy Hiroshi Mikitani announced in 2010 and put in place in 2012, which the company calls "Englishnization." Interviews for global PM roles, even in Tokyo, are commonly run in English.
How AllthingsPM does this. Each Rakuten round tests a different skill, so drill them one at a time. The Rakuten question hub holds all 22 Rakuten questions, and any of them starts a scored mock in one click, typed or by voice. The AI interviewer asks follow-ups the way a hiring manager does, so your first hard follow-up does not happen in the real room.
What questions does Rakuten ask PM candidates?
Our Rakuten question hub holds 22 questions tagged to Rakuten. They are practice questions reported from Rakuten interviews and prep sources, not a leaked list. Each has its own page, an answer guide and a button to start a mock.
The shape of this set is unusual. Most company banks lean on product design and behavioral prompts. Rakuten's leans on advertising: publisher monetization, video ads, demand side platforms, cookieless targeting. That fits the teams that hire PMs outside Japan, such as Rakuten Advertising and the ad-supported streaming services Rakuten TV and Viki.
Ad monetization and ad tech
- Why is video so important to improve ad monetization?
- How will you improve ad monetization for streaming services app?
- What are the interactions that you have with the ad ops team?
- Provide two examples where you improved the ad monetization.
- What key metrics are used to measure video ad effectiveness?
- How will you support advertising in a cookieless world?
- How do you use data to make effective ad decisions?
- Tell me a scenario where data was used to make/change an ad serving decision.
- What are the algorithms used by Demand Side platforms in a programmatic advertising model?
- How does advertising influence user behavior?
- What are the primary ways by which publishers monetize ad inventory?
- How is data used to make ad serving decisions?
- What are the advertising challenges to overcome in 2021?
Streaming product and tech
- What are the key features of a video streaming app?
- How are video players integrated with streaming apps?
Strategy and segmentation
- How would you decide whether to launch Instagram Shopping in a new country?
- How do you do customer segmentation?
Behavioral and collaboration
- What do you know about Rakuten?
- Can you share in detail how you interact with the development team?
- Can you tell me about a time where you had to deal with customer complaints?
- Can you give us a few examples where you have planned and conducted A/B tests?
- What were the technical challenges that you faced while launching your first app? How did you address them?
How AllthingsPM does this. Every question above links to a page with an answer guide and a mock button. Open the streaming ad monetization question, read the guide, close it, then answer out loud. The AI interviewer asks which revenue lever you picked, what it does to viewer retention and how you would measure it, then scores you.
How do you answer Rakuten ad monetization questions?
Thirteen of 22 questions sit here, so this is where most prep time should go. They split into three kinds.
Concept checks ("What are the primary ways publishers monetize ad inventory?", "What algorithms do demand side platforms use?"). Answer crisply, then connect to a product decision. For inventory, cover direct sold deals, programmatic open auctions, private marketplaces and programmatic guaranteed, plus the choice between ad load and user experience. For DSPs, explain bid prediction (the chance of a click or conversion), bid shading and budget pacing at a level a PM needs, not a data scientist.
Improvement prompts ("How will you improve ad monetization for a streaming app?"). Use a clear structure:
- Clarify the model: free ad-supported (AVOD or FAST), subscription with ads, or hybrid. Rakuten TV runs all of these in Europe; Viki has a free ad tier and a paid tier.
- Write the revenue equation: viewers × watch time × ad load × fill rate × price (CPM).
- Pick one lever and say why. Raising ad load is fast but costly: Digiday reported that Viki chose an especially light load of two minutes maximum.
- Propose two or three ideas: better targeting from first-party data, new formats like pause ads, sponsored FAST channels.
- Name a guardrail: watch time or churn must not fall.
Data stories ("Tell me a scenario where data changed an ad serving decision"). These are behavioral questions in ad clothing. Bring one real example with a before number, what you tested and an after number. If you have no ads background, pick any case where data reversed your first instinct, and say how it would transfer.
The cookieless question tests whether you think about privacy as a product constraint. Talk about first-party data from logged-in users, contextual targeting, and clean rooms. Rakuten has an edge here: its members use one shared ID across its services, which is exactly the first-party data advertisers want.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our metrics interview questions guide covers revenue equations and guardrails. Run the video ad effectiveness question as a mock; the interviewer will ask why you picked completion rate over viewability, which is the follow-up that trips most people.
How do you handle Rakuten strategy and streaming questions?
The two streaming questions ("key features of a video streaming app", "how video players integrate with streaming apps") check that you understand the product you would own. Know the basics: the player SDK, adaptive bitrate streaming, where ads get stitched in (client side or server side), and how playback errors hurt both viewers and ad revenue.
The market entry prompt ("launch Instagram Shopping in a new country") maps to Rakuten's own history of taking services across borders. Structure it as:
- Market: size of online shopping, mobile use, payment habits, competitors.
- Readiness: merchants, logistics, local rules on data and commerce.
- Test first: a limited launch with clear go and no-go metrics.
- Decision: commit, with what would change your mind.
For segmentation, show a method, not a list: pick the goal, choose variables (behavior beats demographics), size each segment, then pick the one to serve first.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our product strategy interview questions guide and go-to-market interview guide cover both formats. The technical PM interview guide helps with the video player question.
How do you prepare for the Rakuten behavioral and culture round?
Rakuten is unusually explicit about its culture. Its corporate philosophy, Rakuten Shugi, lists Five Principles for Success:
- Always Improve, Always Advance
- Passionately Professional
- Hypothesize, Practice, Validate, Shikumika
- Maximize Customer Satisfaction
- Speed!! Speed!! Speed!!
Rakuten also says it bases competency assessment on elements from these principles, which makes them worth preparing against. Map a story to each:
- Speed: a launch you shipped much faster than planned, and what you cut.
- Hypothesize, Practice, Validate, Shikumika: an experiment you ran and then turned into a repeatable system ("shikumika" means building it into a system). This also answers the A/B testing question.
- Maximize Customer Satisfaction: the customer complaints question.
- Passionately Professional: the technical challenges of your first launch.
"What do you know about Rakuten?" is in our bank for a reason. Know that Rakuten Group runs more than 70 services across e-commerce, fintech, mobile and digital content, linked by one membership and Rakuten Points. Then say which part of that ecosystem your team touches.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our behavioral PM interview questions guide has STAR examples. Run the development team question as a voice mock, in English, and let the interviewer ask for specifics. The resume review against a JD shows which of your stories match the Rakuten posting.
What does a 3 week Rakuten prep plan look like?
| Week | Focus | What to do on AllthingsPM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ads and monetization basics | Read the answer guides for all 13 ad questions; write your own revenue equation for a streaming app; run three mocks |
| 2 | Stories and culture | Write five STAR stories mapped to the Five Principles; run the behavioral questions as voice mocks in English |
| 3 | Strategy, streaming and the real JD | Mock the market entry and segmentation prompts; paste the Rakuten job description into the JD mock; run a resume review against it |
Short on time? Keep week 1 and the JD mock. Our 30 day PM interview study plan has a longer version.
Are there live Rakuten PM jobs on AllthingsPM?
Our jobs catalog holds 116 live PM job descriptions at 18 AI companies, and Rakuten is not one of them today. Rakuten posts its own openings on its careers sites. To practice for one, copy the posting into the JD mock interview; it builds questions from that description. Resume Job Match finds other PM roles that fit your resume.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Rakuten PM interview prep
Most Rakuten prep pages describe the process in a paragraph or list questions without helping you answer them. Glassdoor has real candidate reviews and Interview Query has a useful process summary, and we cite both here. Human coaches add a real person, at a much higher price per session.
AllthingsPM turns preparation into practice. You get 22 Rakuten-tagged questions, each with its own page and answer guide, and a scored AI interviewer that follows up on every one, typed or by voice, in English. That matters most for the ad monetization questions, where a textbook answer falls apart at the first follow-up about CPMs or fill rate. You can paste the actual Rakuten job description and get a mock built from it. The question bank adds 4,122 questions from 260 companies, and the AI PM course covers data, metrics and AI skills that ads and personalization roles need. It all sits in one place, with a free tier and Pro at $20/month or $120/year.
Use the process guides to learn the stages. Use AllthingsPM to practice until your answers hold up. Start with the Rakuten question hub.
