The Airbnb product manager interview has a shape that sets it apart from other big tech loops, according to the prep guides and candidate reports we read. There are usually three 30 to 45 minute phone screens (recruiter, hiring manager and a peer PM). Then comes an onsite built around a case study you present to a panel of about five people, followed by breakout interviews and a cross-functional round that checks fit with Airbnb's core values. The best prep is to rehearse a presented case and real Airbnb prompts out loud. AllthingsPM gives you 54 Airbnb-tagged questions, each with an answer guide and a one-click AI mock. It has a free tier, and Pro costs $20 a month.
AllthingsPM is an AI PM course and PM interview prep platform. This guide is not affiliated with Airbnb, and it says which facts come from which source.
What is the Airbnb PM interview process?
Airbnb's own careers site does not describe its interview steps. The stage by stage detail below comes from Aced (formerly Exponent), Prepfully, Leland and candidate posts on Blind.
| Stage | Length | What it tests | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | 30 to 45 min | Background, motivation, early core values signals | Aced, Prepfully |
| Hiring manager screen | 30 to 45 min | Domain depth; may include a short product case | Aced, Prepfully |
| Peer PM screen | 30 to 45 min | Collaboration and how you set measurable goals | Aced, Prepfully |
| Onsite: case study presentation | Up to 1 hour to a panel of about 5 | Strategic recommendation, metrics, prioritization | Aced, Prepfully |
| Onsite: breakout interviews | 30 to 45 min each | Deeper follow-ups on your case with each panelist | Aced |
| Onsite: cross-functional and core values | Varies | Mission alignment and culture fit | Aced, Prepfully |
The case arrives early. Prepfully says candidates get the case study PDF "seven days before your scheduled presentation." That week is the part of the loop you control the most, so plan it.
Timeline. Aced says the whole process "could take months or just weeks," depending on the role. Do not count on a fixed number of weeks.
Round names vary. A candidate on Blind listed the onsite as "presentation, strategy & vision, goals & execution, cross functional, culture and leadership." That matches the table above with different labels: the presentation, a product vision round, a metrics and execution round, then the people rounds.
How AllthingsPM does this. The Airbnb loop tests a presented case, product sense, metrics and values, so drill each one separately. The Airbnb question hub groups all 54 questions by type, and any of them starts a scored mock in one click. Answer typed or by voice, so the panel is not the first audience for your case.
How does the Airbnb case study presentation work?
The case study is the centre of the onsite. Aced describes it as a presentation of up to an hour to a panel of about five people, followed by breakout sessions of 30 to 45 minutes with panelists. It says the case tests problem solving, metrics thinking and prioritization. Prepfully describes the goal as making a strategic recommendation across group and breakout sessions.
Treat it as a product review, not a school essay. A structure that fits what the guides describe:
- Restate the problem and the goal in one slide. Name the guest and host sides of it.
- Show your evidence. Use the data in the PDF and say what you assumed.
- Pick one user segment and one problem, and say why.
- Recommend one solution, with an MVP and a longer vision.
- Close with metrics: a primary metric, an input metric and a guardrail.
- List your risks and what you would test first.
The breakouts are where candidates lose ground. Each panelist can press on a different slide, so practice defending every number and every cut you made. Prepfully's advice fits here: strong candidates "envision the ideal end state for the Airbnb community, including both guests and hosts."
How AllthingsPM does this. Use a strategy prompt from the hub, such as How would you determine how to sell hotels on Airbnb?, as a practice case. Build a short deck, then run the mock and let the AI interviewer attack your weakest slide. The course's 14 graded case studies train the same write-up muscle, and our guide to case study practice platforms covers more ways to rehearse.
What questions does Airbnb ask PM candidates?
Our Airbnb question hub holds 54 questions tagged to Airbnb. They are practice questions reported from Airbnb interviews and prep sources, not a leaked list. Each one has its own page, an answer guide and a button to start a mock.
The split fits the loop. Product design is the biggest group, which matches the product vision round. Behavioral is second, which fits a company that runs a dedicated values interview. Strategy and metrics together are 19 questions, the material of the case and the execution round.
Product sense and design
- How would you improve the Airbnb app?
- Design a feature for Airbnb that helps travelers plan group trips more easily.
- How do you improve the check out experience for Airbnb?
- How would you increase the conversion rate of the Airbnb Reservation experience for first timers?
- Develop a solution for Airbnb to help guests find properties that match their preferences.
Metrics and execution
- You have seen a 10% decrease in total bookings on Airbnb this month. What will you do?
- Define success metrics for the Airbnb traveler booking experience.
- How would you measure the satisfaction of hosts on Airbnb?
- How would you determine success for the "Things to do" feature in Airbnb?
- What A/B tests will you run to increase the booking rate among Airbnb guests?
Strategy
- Should Airbnb offer free experiences/tours?
- For a marketplace, how would you decide whether to have two different apps for buyers and sellers or only a single app?
- How would you improve the user activation rate of Airbnb?
Behavioral
- Describe a product/feature that you worked on from ideation to delivery.
- How do you work with Designers?
- How do you know when to cut corners to get a product out the door?
How AllthingsPM does this. Every question above links to its own page with an answer guide and a mock button. Open the 10% bookings drop, read the guide, close it, and answer out loud. The AI interviewer asks what you checked first, whether you split guests from hosts, and what you would do next, then scores you.
Why does every Airbnb answer need two sides?
Airbnb is a two-sided marketplace, and its interview prompts show it. Look at the list above: host satisfaction, guest conversion, a single app or two apps for buyers and sellers. An answer that only serves guests misses half the business.
For any product or metrics question, name both sides before you pick one:
- Guests: search, trust, price clarity, booking, the stay, the review.
- Hosts: listing quality, pricing, calendar, payouts, guest behaviour.
Then pick the side the goal points to and say what could hurt the other side. That is your guardrail metric. For a bookings drop, check logging and seasonality first, then split by guest funnel step and by host supply before you name a cause.
How AllthingsPM does this. Our metrics interview guide walks through the drop diagnosis step by step, and the Lean Analytics summary covers marketplace metrics and picking one metric that matters. The course chapter on proving impact shows how to measure features that serve more than one user group.
How do you prepare for the Airbnb core values round?
Airbnb's four core values, as listed by Aced, are Champion the Mission, Be a Host, Embrace the Adventure and Be a Cereal Entrepreneur. Aced's summaries: create global belonging, serve others with hospitality, welcome uncertainty with flexibility, and think big and volunteer for challenges.
Aced's company guide says "all candidates, regardless of their role, will undergo an extensive behavioral assessment focusing on cultural fit and alignment with Airbnb's core values." It also says behavioral rounds "begin with your first interview and continue through the final round." Interview Query adds that the onsite includes one or two dedicated core values interviews run by trained interviewers from outside your prospective team.
Prepare it like this:
- Write two stories per value, eight in total.
- Give every story a number in the result and a real mistake you learned from.
- Say "I", not "we." Values interviewers want to know what you did.
- Have a true, specific answer to "why Airbnb?" Interview Query says the recruiter screen already asks about your passion for Airbnb.
How AllthingsPM does this. Run your resume and the Airbnb posting through resume review against the JD to find which requirements your stories do not prove yet. Then rehearse the 14 behavioral questions on the Airbnb hub in mocks. Our behavioral questions with STAR answers shows the story shape that holds up under follow-ups.
Does Airbnb still hire product managers?
Yes, but the role has changed. At Figma's Config conference in 2023, CEO Brian Chesky said Airbnb "got rid of the classic product management function" and "combined product management with product marketing," as reported by Mind the Product. His reason: "you can't develop products unless you know how to talk about the products." He also said "the designers are equal to the product managers." Reports on the change say program management work moved to program managers.
For your interview, that means two things. First, expect to be judged on how clearly you tell the story of a product, which is exactly what the case presentation tests. Second, expect design to be a peer. Brian Chesky's famous design exercise, the 11-star experience, is a useful lens for any Airbnb product question: imagine the absurd best version, then work back to what you can ship.
How AllthingsPM does this. Practice telling a product story in two minutes with the mock, then check it against the product sense interview guide. The Inspired summary covers how strong product teams work with design as a partner, which is the model Airbnb describes.
A 3 week Airbnb PM prep plan
| Week | Focus | Do this on AllthingsPM |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stories and screens | Write eight core values stories. Run them through resume review. Answer "Why Airbnb?" and "How do you work with Designers?" in mocks. |
| 2 | Product sense and metrics | One Airbnb design or metrics question a day from the Airbnb hub, timed at 35 minutes, always covering guests and hosts. |
| 3 | The case | When the PDF arrives, build the deck, then do a daily mock on a strategy question and a full run from the pasted posting in the JD mock. |
If your role touches AI features, add two lessons a week from the AI PM course, starting with the interview loop lesson. Decode and Conquer is a widely used primer on product case answers. To compare loops, read our Google PM interview guide and Meta PM interview guide.
How AllthingsPM does this. Every row of the plan runs inside AllthingsPM: stories in resume review, cases from the Airbnb hub, full runs in the JD mock and primers in book summaries. Airbnb roles are not in our jobs catalog yet, so paste the Airbnb posting straight into the JD mock.
Why AllthingsPM is the better choice for Airbnb PM prep
Airbnb scores how you present, defend and explain your thinking under follow-up questions. So your prep has to include being pushed, many times, on real Airbnb prompts. Books give you frameworks but cannot push back. Generic AI chat can role-play, but it does not know Airbnb's prompts and will not score you. Coach marketplaces offer former Airbnb PMs, which is useful for a final polish, but you pay per session.
AllthingsPM puts the whole loop in one place. It has 54 Airbnb-tagged questions, each with an answer guide and a one-click scored mock. It builds mocks from the exact Airbnb job description, typed or spoken. It adds resume review against the JD for the values round, and an AI PM course built from 604 real job postings. Of the tools we found, only 4 build mocks from a job description, and AllthingsPM is the only one that also has a course, a question bank and live JDs.
| What you need for Airbnb | AllthingsPM | Coach marketplaces | Generic AI chat | Books |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Real Airbnb questions with answer guides | 54, each with its own page | Question lists in guides | No curated bank | Sample cases |
| Scored mock with follow-ups | Yes, text or voice | Yes, with a human | Unscored role-play | No |
| Mock from the exact Airbnb posting | Yes | Not their core offer | Only if you prompt it | No |
| Story check against the JD | Resume review against the JD | Sometimes | Only if you prompt it | No |
| Price | Free tier; $20/month or $120/year | Per session | Varies | One-time purchase |
The verdict: book a coach for one final run of your case if your budget allows, but do the daily volume on AllthingsPM. That is where the Airbnb questions, the scored mocks and the course live together. Start in the Airbnb question hub.
